Default Fish Finder/GPS combo?

I am thinking about upgrading to a gps unit but I do not know were to start looking, I have a Lowrance fish finder and was thinking about just buying a gps unit to go in the boat. Any thoughts on this idea? Would it be better to just upgrade to a combo unit? Any thoughts would be helpful, thanks.

I just upgraded from my '87 Lowrance X-50 F.F. and my '93 Lowrance Globalmap 1000 plotter. I was always happy with these units but at 47 my eyes are slow to refocus as I shift my gaze from from the water to my displays. I simply needed a larger disply so I opted for a 10.4" Standard-Horizon plotter/sonar combo. I'd say if your happy with your fish finder that you might just look for a stand alone plotter. Otherwise a combo is in order. BTW, my Globalmap with chart chips from Newport to Desolation Sound is looking for a new home.

What kind of budget range are you looking at?

You're not unrealistic at all. Here is a 5" unit with cutting edge technology for $410.00. <$500 GPS Add FishFinder later if you want. I'm not necesesarily endorsing S.H.. There are plenty of fine units< $500.
