Re: Halibut Bait?
Yes squid makes a great bait. I sometimes use a black label herring and a couple squid too.

Re: Halibut Bait?
Squid works well but is not necessarily the cheapest bait. I guess if you have to buy your Herring it would be cheaper.
If I had to choose one or the other I would rather use Herring. I doesn't hang on as well but for me it seems to out fish Squid. I like Shad even better. A well salted shad seems to out fish everything.

Re: Halibut Bait?
Squid has worked OK for us. We catch most of our fish on shad but we take herring along just in case we need another option.

Re: Halibut Bait?
I have had better luck with large herring, than squid, but am curious how you do the shad? Strips or whole.

I've done both. Some of the biggest Halibut I've caught have come off the biggest, ugliest hunks of bait you could imagine.
If I'm not going to be using them whole I prefer to use the lower half of the fish because it's shiny. I take and make a cut starting at the vent angling down towards the backbone and the head of the fish. When my fillet knife hits the backbone I cut through all the rib bones until i hit the gill plate then just cut it away.
I then use the remainder of the shad for crab bait. Don't be afraid to utilise the entire fish instead of just the belly. All of it works very well whole or cut up but remember half of what we do is to make us feel better not the fish

Re: Halibut Bait?
Squid and octopus is really cheap at Winco. Just go to their seafood counter. Couple bucks a pound for all you will need for bait and it works.

Re: Halibut Bait?
Squid with a very large herring is the best you can get in my humble opinion. Irresistalble to Hali's and if the herring comes off the squid usally sticks with the hook.

Re: Halibut Bait?
If you have any belly shin from a butt( white side) put it on with your herring, 2"x 6" seems to work very well and will keep your herring on longer.

Re: Halibut Bait?
I like to use chad but I cut it in two on a bias then hook tho head to the top hook and the tail to the trailing hook ,it works like a charm.
I am new to i fish and would like to know how to post a question .I also am not the sharpest hook in the box as far as the computer is concerned, any assistance would be appreciated.

Re: Halibut Bait?
I have been fishing all my life ,I live part of the year in Vegas and the rest in Coos bay. I have been fishing the coast for 25 years and zeroed in on Coos bay where I have many friends. They are not all fishing friends for I also play (AT) golf. I have a 23ft North River Seahawk with a 150 yamaha and an8hp kicker. I love to fish Halibut ,tuna and salmon. I have sent e- mails to to the powers that be about the stupidity of the halibut regs as far as the daily limit is concerned. I go out of Port Orford and we run 25 miles to the fishing grounds. I tried to explain to them ,that inlieu of the energy crunch that it would in the interest of our country to allow us to (if very lucky)catch two daily and save us on gas and our very lives. I could go on and on ,on ling ect if we have halibut in the boat. Whoever made these rules obviously doesn't know what it takes. PLASE EXCUSE THE LONG WINDEDNESS<but you asked.

Re: Halibut Bait?
Welcome Salmon15! You have a 23' NR Seahawk with as 150 on it? Man that's a lot of boat for that motor! How does she run?
I agree it would be nice to keep two a day. I think the method to their madness is to keep it open for the maximum amount of people possible.
What would be interesting to know is that if they opened it up to two fish a day whether or not the Red fish impact would go down Just a thought

Re: Halibut Bait?
Not sure about the legallity of using salmon bellies, but I can tell you they work well . Squid is also good and you can get 5 pounds of squid frozen for about $8 at Pacific Seafood.

Re: Halibut Bait?
With the ability to keep cod on the boat with Halibit now, they make good stip baits and are tough. Salmon chunks can produce beside the shad, black label and squid mentioned above. Are most people using trailer hooks? I did OK with circles last year but did miss a few.

I've tried just about everything as bait. Halibut don't seem too picky. I don't have a preference.

Re: Halibut Bait?
Salmon bellie's are legal, as well as Tuna bellie's, Squid works well, espically if doubled with Herring, Shad has been my #1 Halibut bait the past 2 years. It's just a big Herring, & if you put on a big fillet strip, most smaller fish, like the protected orange fish will leave it alone.

Re: Halibut Bait?
Very good point by retaliate. I use a whole fillet on big shad and use the whole shad minus the head on smaller ones. Very few bottom fish will bite it. I don't think one orange fish was caught using this method on my boat last year.

Re: Halibut Bait?
Yep I wish I could pick up more small shad. It's kinda funny when I'm walking the banks trying to trade my bigger fish for the smallest ones i can find.
