Vedder River BC
I am going on a four day fishing excursion to Canada in a week and a half. I'm trying to stick my first (thanks RT ) Chum salmon and also hoping to hit some Chinook. I will probablly be fishing the Vedder mostly. But was wondering if anyone on the board knows of any sources of information on locations to fish on the river. I know it is normally a zoo and am willing to hike to escape most of the crowds. Anyway, any info that I can get would be helpful.
Thanks,
Ryan www.xprt.net/~ryandsar

Re: Vedder River BC
Ram, I would get in touch with Fred's Custom Tackle there in Chilliwack, BC. They are very helpful and the shop is not to far from the river. It is on Vedder Road. I will be going up in 3 weeks to fish the Faser and the Harrison. I plan to take my sled up with me. From the info I have gotten it is not uncommon to have 15 to 20 fish day's on the Vedder the king's are big, there should be lots of silvers comming back too. The chums run up to 20 pounds, a friend that was there this past weekend got a 17 and 19 pound chum on the Vedder. You can find Fred's on the web, search for Freds BC Tackle.
Hope this will help

Re: Vedder River BC
Hi Ryan. The Vedder has great runs of fish as you know! Unfortunate that it is within close proximity to the big Metros of Vanc. and Seattle. In an in depth ariticle about the Vedder in Beautiful British Columbia magazine they did mention that there are a few places that require significant hike ins that will get you into an uncrowded (accept for a bunch of fish) situation, so your hike idea is right on. But hey, take it easy on those nice fish. Don't "fist the Chum" and "hit the Chinook". (jk - ). Have a good one up there. Looking forward to hearing about it, and maybe seeing some nice fish/river pics if you take a camera. Have a good one Ryan. - Steve

Re: Vedder River BC
Fished the Vedder last weekend, the middle and upper river was stuffed with silvers, lower river with kings. On the other side of Tahami Creek (sp?), hooked 11 landed 8 in a morning. I did have plenty of company though. In a week and a half, the kings should be more spread out throughout the river.
If you haven't got your license yet, Freds opens at 7 am (8 am last year) so you can get your license and not lose too much morning. $58 U.S. for the non-resident license and salmon stamp.
Only the occasional chum last week, but last year in late October, the river was literally boiling with chums down by the railroad bridge.

Re: Vedder River BC
obsessed,
What were you using?? I have heard that spinners work for the silvers and to use eggs or sand shrimp for the kings o the Vedder. I will be there Oct. 20, 21 & 22 to fish the Fraser for Sturgeon and Silvers in the mouth of the Vedder and Harrison.

Re: Vedder River BC
Thanks for the info guys. I'm getting really excited for the trip now. I'm spooling 3 reels with nice fresh line. RT, in the article you mentioned in the Beautiful British Columbia magazine does it give any specifics on where these hike in places are? I have gotten wind of some other area rivers that can be just as productive with less pressure. Thanks to all who have contributed. In a week it will be time to soak the fresh batch of eggs for nooks and float some jigs for chums. Oh boy am I really exited now

Re: Vedder River BC
I was doing the Canadian thing with float and yarn (thats right, just yarn; Glo-bug shrimp pink or peachy king). Its a pretty fast drift so you need a long leader. I hit all of the fish in the mouth (inside the mouth), lots in the top jaw so I don't think I was lining em.
I've experienced lining fish first hand in that chum hole I mentioned, by swinging the float instead of free spooling. After lining 4 fish in 4 casts (all hooked on the outside corner of the mouth), I finally got it and started free spooling again.
I bet eggs would work, but again, the drift is pretty fast and if you free spool for any distance, reeling up through the current would wreak havoc on your eggs. The hole will get plenty of traffic so just watch and imitate, if your skeptical. This is the 2nd year I've done this, and I've found it more effective than doing it the American way.

Re: Vedder River BC
I looked for the issue with the Vedder article and could'nt find it Ryan. I think there are a few tackle shops there (one mentioned above) that can steer you to less crowded hike ins. That will be so exciting to hike thru a beautiful area and break out onto a gorgeous stretch of holes chuck full of fish! They are expecting a huge fall run this year. Have you been drooling on yourseld thinking about it? I would! Can't wait to hear about it. Tight (unbroken) lines. - RT
