Coffee Makers
Krups? Are they any better?
Mine is on the fritz. I use them daily, if not multi daily.
I'm tired of my coffee pot going out every three years or so. Has anyone had luck with another brand that keeps longer?

Re: Coffee Makers
I have a Krups "Aroma Control" automatic coffee maker. I love having coffee ready when I wake up. I also like the way the filter holds the hot water until the cone is full, allowing the coffee to steep, before draining into the carafe. I think it makes a richer cup of coffee that way.

Re: Coffee Makers
Jennie -
Best way IMO to make coffee is with a french press. Boil water, put coffee in press, pour almost boiling water over - let it steep for 3-4 minutes, push filter down - pour the best cup you've ever had. Easy to control strength. Can get a four cupper.
Krups is probably one of the best out there for the auto makers. I have a cuisinart that is ok. Charcoal filter gets used up pretty quick due to the hard water around here. I hate to admit it sometimes, but I worked as a barista for 6 years and became somewhat of a "coffee snob" during that time. Paid for schooling, though.

Re: Coffee Makers
Bunn makes a nice coffee maker. Water stays hot in the reservoir and makes coffee with out the wait.

Re: Coffee Makers
We just bought a new krupps that grinds the beans and makes the coffee. It is so cool and all you do is set the timer or turn it on.

Re: Coffee Makers
Hazmat nailed it on the head. French Press is the way to go. Simple cheap and makes the best coffee out there IMO. Plus there are very few parts to go bad, and when they do a new one is about $20.

Re: Coffee Makers
we;ve had a krups for several years without problems, my wife likes it because of the automatic setting. when its just me I grind beans with a hand grinder and use the stovetop espresso maker that I bought in italy 20 years ago, I think its tradition as much as the taste.

Re: Coffee Makers
My Mr. Coffee is great. I had a Krups and it didn't hold up. My cheapie Mr. Coffee has my coffee ready when I get out of bed. It can make 12 cups in minutes which helps when I'm filling my 2 qt. thermos for fishing.
I found it's more the quality of the coffee you put in the pot than the pot itself. It just keeps going and going!

Re: Coffee Makers
Just read a long article on the "best" way to make great coffee. They had two recommendations:
1) French Press: Bring cold water to a boil in the old tea pot, let stand for 40 seconds off the heat (you want about 195 degrees), pour over coarse grounds in the press, let stand for 4 minutes, press and pour.
2) Melitta (sp) filter: Use the Melitta filter holder and a paper filter (gold mesh gives a metallic flavor). Again, boil water in the tea pot and let stand 40 seconds, pour over grounds in filter and catch in carafe.
In either case, coffee should be put in a thermal carafe if not used immediately.
So, there you go. I just saved you $40-60.

Re: Coffee Makers
French press is good for special occasions.
I remember living with a guy who would, hippy style, hand grind and french press our coffee each morning.
It was a great time, living in DT Portland, sitting cross legged on the floor, grinding coffee, with the sun streaming through the window and old rock n roll on the stereo...
Ah... those were the days. All the time in the world!
Now that I'm old, I want a machine to do it for me!

Re: Coffee Makers
We have a Braun we like, you can adjust the warming tray heat setting, stop to pour while filling, program to start automatically, auto off, 12 cup capacity. The coffee tastes good too. We have a French Press that we used for a while but we like this one better.

Re: Coffee Makers
You know... The more I think about it, if anyone knows of any handsome hippies who want to sit in my living room, bare chested, grinding coffee, I'd like that, too.

Re: Coffee Makers
we bought a barista from starbucks for our reception area -I almost fliped three lids when I found out it costs near $1000. After filling it up with beans and water all you do is push a button and it makes whatever type you want-double shot esspresso-single shot-regular coffee- it grins the beans then packs the beans for selected size of shot or regular coffe then dispenses it all in about 15 seconds. All you do is keep it filled with whole beans dump the used grinds which collect in a waste receptical and fill it with water once in a while. it is computorized and asks to be rinsed and cleaned with a solution about every two months -its easy- you put your cup under the spicot push a button and in 15 seconds you have your coffee or esspresso. Now after 4 years and over 4000 dispenced cups(It keeps track ) the darn think works as good as it did when we got it my accountant(a coffe fanatic)-the one who bought it noted that that it works out to .25 cents a cup plus beans and that # is going down each time it makes another-not to mention the raves our customers give it when we offer them a esspresso how they want it while they wait the machine is about 1-1/2 foot sq and takes up little room. In the end all my ranting and raving about a $1000 coffee machine turned out to be a plesent suprise .

We have a Cuisinart and it has been going strong for 4 years now.
It is used more than once on a daily basis.

Re: Coffee Makers
The grind and brew are pretty nice, only complaint is the clean up before each use, takes maybe 5 minutes. The insulated carafe is great, keeps coffee warm most of the day. (if it lasts that long)

Re: Coffee Makers
Mr. Coffee. $19.95 four years ago. Lost its top in the boat on the way to Paulina Lake year before last. Looks bad. Tastes good. As soon as it is brewed, the coffee goes into a Thermos and the coffeemaker is rinsed with hot water and drained dry. Coffee is good all day.
