Default Deschutes report...

Man, i had a great weekend.
I started off my trip at 3a.m. sunday morning. Got to the deschutes (near maupin) right at dawn. There were TONS of hunters parked along the road, and guess what i saw along the road down to the river. 4 HUGE bucks just walkin near the road. They looked at me for a while, then kept on walkin, about 50 yards away from me. 3 of em were 4by4's, and one was a HUGE 5by5. It was quite the scene.

All the rain from saturday darkened up the river some, but not bad. It was a nice, healthy green. Right of the bat, I landed and released a nice, bright, 29 inch hatchery steelhead. That got the morning off to a good start. I suddenly wasnt cold tired or hungry anymore. About 20 minutes later I hooked into another steelhead. At first it looked like it was going to be a short fight. The fish hadn't made any big runs, and i had it about 15 feet from the shore. Then it turned and took off, ripping out line and into my into my backin in about 3 second. I had to chase it, honestly, about 250 yards downstream. About 30 minutes later I released the 33 inch BRIGHT steelhead. I was hit with a sudden attack of sore-arm-sendrome (and I actually have a bruise on my fore-arm where the but of my flyrod was pushing into it.).
The midday fishing was pretty slow, but the evening I briefly hooked another steelie.
This morning was cooooooooooooold. I got up and hit the river again. After a few casts i landed a small hatchery hen (about 22 inches), and released it. I fished through the run, got to the very tail end, and realized how hungry I was. I though to myself, "ok, this is my last cast". Right as i turned to start headin back to shore, a fish nailed my fly. It was another real bright hatchery fish, about 31 inches, which i released. After lunch, I decided to hit the river one more time before i headed home. I was rewarded with a nice, 28 1/2 inch hatchery steelhead, and this one i decided to keep. It had some nice eggs, which i kept. What the best way to cure them for salmon fishing?!?!
I got all my fish swinging green butt skunks, except for the last one, which i got on a #8 Kaughmans Stone. Saw a bunch of other people catchin fish too.
So how was the coast this weekend?!!?
Anyhoo, I'm beat! Time for Bed!
Tight lines -Evan-

Great report. Sounds like you were above Maupin, is that right? I am headed over there in two weekends, Warm Springs - Trout Creek, I hope I have the success you did! Excellent work!

Why are you releasing hatchery fish ? Kill them and drop them off on my grill.

MMMmmmm, it's about the best time of year on the Deschutes right now ...
