Default Crankbait baitcaster question

I just got a baitcast combo (my first) that I plan to use for crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Unfortunately, the reel they sent me was the 6.2:1 instead of the 5.1:1 that I ordered. My question is, is it necessary (or preferable) to have a slower gear ratio for crankbaits?

I would rather have a faster retrieve especially for fighting fish. I like to get there heads up and skip them 5lber's in the boat.

seeing as how you'll use it for spinnerbaits as well i'd prefer the high speed retrieve then train yourself to reel slower for cranks...

I like the faster baitcasters . I think that you will love it . The only advantage to a slower lower geared baitcaster
for crankbaits is if you are fishing crankbaits in 15 feet of water or deeper . They will give you more power and be easier to reel at greater depths . As for the faster speed you have more options and can reel slower or burn then back to you . This time of year you can throw a Rat-L-Trap and burn it back as fast as you can reel it . You can't reel it fast enough to keep it away from a bass that wants it .
It is great for a reaction bait .

Well, I like to consider myself a crankn and spinnerbaitn master. I can crank like you've never seen! 6.2:1 Ratio is all I ever use. Make sure and get your brakes set right. I have my Chronarchs dialed in!

Considering that you will be using it for both spinners and cranks, keep the 6.2:1. You won't like cranking really big crankbaits with it, but anything 1/2oz or less will be fine. FWIW, there is not a lot to be gained up here in the PNW with real big cranks...water's too clear (generally). C&R, Steve
