Default \'Greenstick\' tuna fishing?

Anybody around here use a 'greenstick' for tuna fishing? I know that it's popular in other places, but have never heard of it around here. Here's a quick overview of what it is:

Never heard of it. Very interesting. I don't think albacore get much chance up here to feed on flying fish, but they certainly do before they get here.

A 45' pole is going to generate a great deal of torque at it's base. Could present some interesting design challenges.

1000 ft of 800# to 1000# line, Are they hand lining them in or does it pop off a clip or something to stand up gear??? If someone can deploy this method during the tuna tournaments I would think there vegas odd would have to improve. It says some boat increase there catch 12 to 15 times. So if you useally get 3 to 5 fish that makes it 36 to 60 fish. I think a under dog should try this out, could get you 3,000 bucks

Yeah, I checked this out last year. No way to rig that huge pole on a little boat. Why not use a kite?

I think it would look pretty impressive wound up in the blender. Seems that is where we put every other experiment.

I bet its cool in the right water and boat though.

Could be rigged if you have a hardtop and pole-base receiver mounted on the deck. I could see how you could have outrigger release clips running back to handlines or rod for each bait. You could rig a manual or electric planner reel for your bird line possibly.

Maybe worth the hassel if it produced the increased harvest numbers in our fishery as it did in the study.

I'm wondering if a compromised approach may work as well ...something that doesn't require the length and weight of the system in the article. I really hate people with miles of line along the surface behind their boats ...hope nobody tries this other than me (chuckle chuckle)

A friend just returned from a week at Panama's tropic lodge and while tuna fishing saw local commercials using this system on yellowfin. Mark

While on a charter in Hawaii I had a conversation with the captain about greensticking for tuna. He used to work a commercial boat out of Hawaii prior to running a sport charter.
It was an interesting conversation. One thing that stood out from the conversation is that they also would hang a lure off the side of the boat on an arm like a crab davit. The lure would bounce on the surface and when tuna came to the boat they would usually catch some on the arm. Often they would catch fish over 100 lbs, when I asked how much stress that put on the arm he answered.. they can't turn their heads, the only way they can swim is up. Grab a boat hook and pull them over to the boat and in.
