look up insecticidal soap. It's non toxic, but I prefer chemicals myself.

Ladybugs. All the non toxics wash off with rain. You can also just pick them off. I buy a few pods of Mantis every year as well.

Re: Aphids on Roses??
Aphids tend to hatch earlier than the predators. That is why you see so many of them early in the season. Spray them off with a strong stream of water for a few more weeks until the predators show up, then the problem usually fixes itself.

Re: Aphids on Roses??
They last until the late fall. Buy them now. I hatch them indoors in a paperbag in a window. Then turn them loose. My local grange sells them but they charge and arm and a leg. there are web sites that sell them for as low as $2.50 per case that release 200 to 500 Mantis. They are really cool if you have small kids. You can hatch lady bugs the same way.

Re: Aphids on Roses??
If you want to stay organic: Just use soapy water. Regular dish washing soap ( NOT DETERGANT) mixed with water in a hand squeeze bottle. Or use Neem oil. Organic, controls aphids, mites and powdery mildew.

Re: Aphids on Roses??
The soap smothers the little critters as they breath through their skin. Give the bigger ones a couple squirts. The best trick I've found is a bird feeder and bird bath = birds =aphids gone. I've heard store bought lady bugs are sometimes harvested in such a way as to disrupt their more effecient , natural dispursement. Plus when the food is gone they don't stick around to see how well your roses do !!

Re: Aphids on Roses??
Every time I wash the truck I take the soapy water and dump it on to the roses it works great.

Re: Aphids on Roses??
Here is what I would suggest when working the OSU master gardener desk........soapy water is OK, Safer brand insecticide (neem oil) is great too. Dont be lured into using the ladybugs, they will just fly off seeking warmer areas. Mantids dont really stay in one place either. Actually your Box Elder Bug that is a 'nuisance' in the fall is a great aphid predator, but not many are around this time of year yet. Good luck

Re: Aphids on Roses??
I always see a guy named Jerry Baker mixing up non-toxic sprays on TV. All kinds of stuff go into the sprayer: soap, mouthwash, whiskey. Different for every bug. Perhaps he has a website with recipes

Re: Aphids on Roses??
Go down to your local garden center and pick up some Bayer (yup, just like the aspirin) systemic rose insecticide. Follow directions on container and presto chango - no more aphids. zip
