Default hunting season

why do we have to give our social security number to get our tags for hunting this year? Personnally I think that it is none of ODFW's business. Did bowhunters have to give theirs too? Also why just hunting, why not for fishing? If they are going to be stupid shouldn't they be consistently stupid? Anyone know their reasoning behind this?

Ian,
The whole reason for the ssn thing was to help chase down fathers who are delinquent on their child support payments. I've been bowhunting for several years and they have my ssn on file. There was some noise when they first initiated the program about it being unconstitutional but haven't heard anything more. I'm afraid the logic behind most stuff our government does escapes me, as it does on this issue.

The reason, I believe, is for the ODFW to use the number for purposes related only to keeping their computerized license files organized and to prevent people with the same names from becoming mixed up in the system. Imagine going to get your hunting license and being told that some other John Doe already recieved a license and being refused. I'm almost posistive that by a bill passed in Oregon, it is legal for the state to ask for it. Besides, the state already has your number for tax purposes and if your afraid of the state catching you for support issues you need to give up hunting and fishing, so that you may use that money to pay back your child support payments.

WK, I don't know why, but I've heard that the Gov. is going to estimate the market value of any elk you drop and charge a capital gains tax on it . (jk) And many think they ARE consistently stupid. (jk on that too - I think). - BTW, my good fishing buddy Gary Till recently dropped his first bull elk with an arrow after a good buggle in. Congrats Gary! - RT

Having a SSN attched to your hunting/fishing license also creates a secondary list of who has or possibly has firearms in the house, if you believe that the State Agencies are not playing Big Brother, you might want to reconsider...but since there is no way to get a round it better bite the bullet...
