Default Ever want to kill your dog???

Ok hear's the story, My wife has a 150lb Newfoundland. He loves her and only her. And he's a smart a$$ First off when my wife and I are in bed if we get to close he jumps into bed In between us and growles at me. He knows how to open the fridge and gets himself dinner. if he's outside and it raining, he'll bark to come in . so if I go out to let him in he just stands there so I get wet to. I really hate this dog. Is it wrong to pray for him to die!!!!

Yeah, I say it's wrong to pray for the death of a pet, especially if the only problem is that the dog annoys you. I've always been able to get along with animals. They usually mirror the attitude you show them.

Hey man, been there done that. I told my then girlfriend, now wife, either him or me! I started dog/owner training school the next week. The instructor taught me how to be a good owner, $250 well spent. Seriously, I was ready to get rid of this dog, he will be 14 in June, and yes it has been a long 14 years, but he turned out to be the best hunting dog I have ever hunted behind.
Good luck.

:depressed: This is one of those topics that I really dislike. :depressed:

I'm so sorry you would want to kill an animal. That's horrid. Please, either leave your girlfriend/wife, or take the dog to the pound and let someone love it properly.

I'm sorry to be a poop, but I just can't handle knowing that this dog is unloved where it is. :depressed:

jennie the dog is probably a good dog. however the owner needs to be the boss. if they arent the boss then the dog will be. this is a case of the owners needing to learn how to be in charge. taking the dog to the pound will not fix the dog. the dog is doing what it knows. ever walk more then 1 dog? there is always 1 dog who is trying to get in front. that dog then becomes the pack leader. watch the dog whisper. its a great show.

We just put down our 10 year old Newfoundland. 150lbs....you got off easy. I went through the exact same thing at first. The dog would actually try to push me from side to side while walking. We had a "talk" one day and than the next day and so on! He finally got the picture. Let me tell you. It was a sad day when he passed. Just put in the time to train him and you correctly.

It's just the word "kill" that bothers me, I guess. It's most hopefully used exagerated, but... it bugs me in print where you can't see the facial expressions.

Yeah, I'm sure it's use is exaggerated here. I sure was mad at one of my dogs once. I had a deer hanging in a basement and the pooch (a yellow lab) got to it while I was at work, ate all but the hind quarters, which I'm sure she would have stuffed in there somehow if she could have reached it! You can probably imagine what 30 or 40 lbs. of fresh venison did to the poor girls digestive processes, punishment enough!! Turned into the best bird dog ever.

Wrestle the dog to the ground bite his ear and growl.
Become the dominant alpha male.
I have a friend who has 6 wolves. He tackled the dominant male and did the above.
I thought he lost his mind. Dog minds really well when he his around.

That dog has your number, attack now!

Hope you weigh more than 150 lbs. And NO I won't do it. I don't like dogs. Good Luk!

It is never the dogs fault but the humans dogs just act how you allow the to act. You and mostly your wife are rewarding or encouraging the dogs behavior. A person that understands dog psych could point out the cause of this problem in 30 minutes. The dog can change its behavior in another 30 minutes. It will take you and your wife a bit longer.

You have to be the Alpha Male. My suggestion to you is to just walk up to the dog, roll him over on his back and then lay on top of him. Don't let him up and repeat the process a couple times a day. This will show him who is the Alpha Male and who is not. Once this clicks, you will have no more issues.

Dogs and humans share a bond like no other. I had a strong willed boxer one time that was like your wifes dog. He was a pain in the rear until I took his food away a few times, growled at him, laid him on his back and got on top of him, then he got the picture. He turned out to be a great companion and when he passed due to eating a salmon head, he took a piece of my heart with him.

As a newfie owner I will agree with some of the comments already made. The proper order needs to be established between you and that dog right away. Dogs don't really care where in the order they are, they just need to know where they are in the order. In absence of a clear pack order a dog will take it upon themselves to set the order, about 10 times out of 10 they think that they belong at the top of the pile.

newfs are big and can be intimitating, but you must not let the dog dictate the order. Newfs are also very loyal, sweet and loving dogs.

I would not let it on the bed again, the growling MUST be addressed immediatelly, a VERY STERN/ANGRY tone in your voice, if that does not appear to make a dent, then perhaps a rolled up newspaper. Also I would suggest that your wife not be involved in the correction. Sounds like the dog sees her at least as number 2 right now. She MUST not give the dog ANY indication that what it did was okay. After the scolding has few minutes to sink in, I would then suggest that you go back to the dog and make nice. Take him for a walk, play with him, whatever, idea is show the dog you are in control, you have corrected the behavior, and that you and the dog are friends and you will be his bud when he acts the correct way.

Good luck, another thing about newfs is that they can be rather thick in the head. So this could take a little work on your part.

EK

ps - I am willing to be your "kill" statment is just frustration and you have no real intention of killing the dog. Should you find the situation can't be controlled (and I think it can) please contact a newf. rescur group.

newf rescue in Portland

They will gladly help you find a new home for your newf.

Now I know why you have an issue with apex predators. Almost every post you write has to do with predators (usually not a good thing said) Your wife's Newfoundland has 99% of the DNA that wolves have. He knows how you really feel about his ancestors. Maybe you need to aquire a different outlook on how the natural world works. Then maybe the dog will come around...........then again maybe not!!

I have times where it crosses my mind to strangle my Lab.

Shes a great dog and is loved my the entire family, but she does things that just drive me nuts.

We got back from camping last weekend and she got a nice warm bath in the bathtub. I dried her off and put her outside while I cleaned the tub. I went to the door to let her in and found her rolling in the flowerbed.

She was covered in barkdust and dirt. Although I was pretty mad all she got was a cold rinse with the garden hose. I think that was punishment enough.
