Default Cougar Kill

Well a friend of mine called me up the other night, to tell me that his house cat turned up missing. He thought it must have been coyotes. So I was gonna go out and try to get a couple, next week. He called me up a couple days later and said that something killed his neighbors 2 fullgrown rotwielers(sp?) a couple nights later. He said they were both pretty big dogs, and in the same yard. They were also right next to the house. I don't know alot about cougars, but I'm guessing that it would have to be a pretty big cat.

Wow that would have to be one mean cat to want to tango with a couple of rotties.

He said they were both tore up pretty bad, but I don't think they were eaten at all. I'm not even sure it was a cougar. We just couldn't think of anything else that could do that.

To be honset I don't think a cougar would take on two rotts. Is his yard fenced?? I would think it would be a crazed meth addict with a sword before a cougar. Cats run from dogs not the other way around. I had a cougar in my yard last year and our dog went after him and he was outof there in a heart beat, and our dog is nothing like a rott let alone two of them. I would look for tracks. the only things on this planent that would do that to rotts is maybe pack of wolves as that has been documented. Where did this happen??? was fish and game notified??? If not they should be

They should be able to tell by the wounds if it was animal or human inflicted

A cougar could take two dogs no problem. In the wild under normal circumstances they will avoid such confrontations because it is less work to climb a tree than fight dogs (wolves.) Plus, the cat doesn't risk getting hurt which might affect it's ability to hunt and kill it's food. But, when cougars are displaced by other male cougars and push into rural areas such predation can and does occur.

Why would wolves climb into a fenced yard?

I'm planning on looking around up there this week. I'm not sure if WDFW has been notified yet. And it's in NE Clark county. Another thought I had was, that there used to be a guy up near there who ran a place called Wolf Haven. He rescued hybrids and had 50-60+ of them when he got shut down. Several got away, but I heard the locals up there took care of them pretty quick. I don't know? I'll see If I can find any tracks this week.

It sounded like they were fenced. I'm gonna try to make it up there monday afternoon, but I think with the rain we've had, its gonna be tough to find tracks. The area is medium sized lots (5-50acres) with strips of brush and small tracts of timber here and there. It would be hard to believe that wolf hybrids were around without anybody seeing them or shooting them. I'm still undecided on what it might have been as well. You might be right on with your meth addict theory. We'll have to wait and see.

Good luck. I would get the fish and game involved if his dog were killed that seriouse. If my dogs were killed some furry rears are going to get rolled.

My co-Worker lives in NE Clark Co, and she had an Older full sized dog that was a well known scrapper, very territorial,

About a year ago, They found the dog pretty tore up out on their property... it had been killed by an animal, and there was poop around it... maybe a bear or a coug,

Do coug's poop to mark near their kills?

We used to have a very large german sheppard, who had a bad temper also. He got into it with a bear and lost. I guess he thought it was another dog and went up to it, big mistake.

Quaka Wacka,
They did not get them all. I had one of the hybrids come through my tree stand last year. Tried to get a shot, however, he picked up the movement of my bow as I was drawing back. I was 35' up, smart buggers. Talked to WDFW about it and they think there may be more than just this one running loose.

However, not sure this is a wolf/hybrid attack. Let me know if you need company, I am an ok tracker. Would like to check this out. With the rain we have had, tracking will be more than difficult, however, we may see something that will give you a clue to what is going on.

Well I talked to my buddy last night, but didn't make it up before dark. He went out and didn't find any tracks this weekend. But apparently there have been a couple of cougar sightings in the area. And lots of other pets missing. He said a neighbor told him that this has happens every 5 years or so. A cougar will wander down from the hills. I guess thats the price you pay for living out that far.
