Default Obsessive Compulsive dissorder?

I have suffered with OCD for quite some time, but have never thought it was bad enough to the point where i ever sought out medical help. I have noticed that the older i get (30 now) it seems to get worse. My question is, are there any of you that suffer from this?, and if so what steps have you taken too help? Are there things you can do too overcome some of the silly things we do?? Any thoughts or advice would certainly be appreciated.

I have it too. I am 29. It's not that bad but I fight it. Seems the more stress I am under the more it becomes noticable.

What exactly is that anyway? I have this weird thing with the alarm clock. I can set it for a certain time, and then feel the need to check it about 20 times or so to make sure it's set. It drives my wife crazy. The other thing I do is constantly worry over the coffee pot being turned off. Even though I make sure it's off, then un plug it, then check it again before I leave to go fishing, I end up thinking about it most of the drive to the water

one of my sons has ocd, he's quite the list maker along with other issues, we try to humor him knowing he has no control. Its also worse with him the amount of stress he seems to be under. He calls himself "monk" sometimes. We're all different, I try to encourage him to relax and not worry about it and it seems to help him.

Wow, does that sound familiar. And here I thought that such concerns were normal? I obsess about the boat trailer rigging (like --- are the safety chains hooked up in the right direction ) and whether or not the wheel bearings are overheating. I must check them every half hour or so.

I reckon there is a fine line between being a "fussbudget" and having a disorder. Here's a good article for those that may not be familiar with OCD ---

In 8 years at my job I messed up 3 times. One time (supposedly. I don't think it was me but the other guy said it was so I accepted it) I switched 2 lines on a valve. Now I check and double check and triple check and quadruple check the lines everytime I change a valve.

The other time I didn't bag a part good enough and when it got shipped out to be cleaned some of the chemical leaked out. Now I bag those things so tight it probablt makes the vendor mad when they have to unbag the part.

The other time I set my alarm clock for 6 p.m. instead of 6 a.m. and over slept and was late for work. The next day I almost did the same thing. Now I have an insane ritual when setting the alarm clock.

The simpliest explanation for this disorder is this,
Obsessive - something you can not stop thinking about
Compulsive - something that you can not stop doing.
Disorder - Something out of the norm

As for me I have tried many meds and have not yet found one that works well for me. I have even had some that made it worst. I just try and consciously think about what I am doing, and try and stop. It's not alway the solution but it works most of the time. Stress is also a big part of how OCD affects me. More stress = more OCD.

Hope that helps

Along this line, many years ago a really smart clinical psychologist told me something that made a lot of sense.

He said that everyone is neurotic to some degree;i.e., everyone is abnormal in some regards. Those that can comfortably cope with their neuroses and lead otherwise happy lives are termed "compensated neurotics". They are O.K., they get along in life with minimal problems. They have happy families and generally satisfactory relationships.

Those whose neuroses are more serious, bad enough to make life unpleasant for themselves or others, are termed "uncompensated neurotics", and they are viewed as ill by society if they go untreated.

The key to happiness, according to the psychologist, is to try to remain in the first category, but never hesitate to seek treatment if you become "uncompensated"; i.e., drift into the second category.

Works for me.

Talk about nerotic .
I cant even set an alarm clock as the anxiety of anticipating the alarm will keep me awake all night ,,, Waitting , just waitting .
So,, I dont use one ever .....

Its my understanding that true OC is linked to chemical imbalance and drugs can help the most suvere cases .

I do the wheel bearing thing as well. My moniker is my boat name refelcting my quest to get it "perfect". I always just thought I was a worry wart about a few things but now I may have to check into this. Very interesting...

My best friend of 30 years has OCD. It's quite amusing to watch him at times. At other times, he drives me freaking crazy. Fortunately, we are good enough friends that we can call out each others deficiencies without prejudice.

He has tried numerous prescription medications that have worked to various degrees. They usually come with pretty significant side effects.

The best thing he has found is of the illegal, green plant variety of "herbal" medication. Before anyone gets their panties in a wad, I'm not advocating illegal drugs or anything else. Just simply relaying what has worked for my friend. The only thing I will say is that it is truely amazing what it does for his condition.

That sounds all too familiar too me. I started doing the Alarm clock thing just as you do a few years ago, and it now has evolved into me now having 5 different alarm clocks placed around my room all with the alarm set on each of them. I thought that this would help me not worry about just one alarm clock failing me, and it actually worked for about a week But now the whole process is every bit as exhausting for me, as I now have too ritually check each and every alarm clock Multiple times (sometimes 20 a piece) and it honestly can take over and hour before i can even lay down for bed... And even then I sometimes wake up in the midlle of the night, and feel the need to go through the whole process again  It can be mentally draining... Unfortunately that is just one of my many compulsions through the day..... Locking the doors is a whole nother story I appreciate all of the input from everyone.

That sounds identical to what I did when I had OCD...I had it when I way around 11-13 and would have to check to make sure everything was locked well over 20 times. I would get in bed and get back up to check again. This would take some time before I was finally exhausted w/ my drill and would fall asleep before I could check again. I grew out of it though and appear fine today.

I suffer from this and take medication for it

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
It's similiar to OCD in many ways.
Here is some info on it.
The essential characteristic of Generalized Anxiety Disorder is excessive uncontrollable worry about everyday things. This constant worry affects daily functioning and can cause physical symptoms. GAD can occur with other anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, or substance abuse. GAD is often difficult to diagnose because it lacks some of the dramatic symptoms, such as unprovoked Panic Attacks, that are seen with other anxiety disorders; for a diagnosis to be made, worry must be present more days than not for at least 6 months.

The focus of GAD worry can shift, usually focusing on issues like job, finances, health of both self and family; but it can also include more mundane issues such as, chores, car repairs and being late for appointments. The intensity, duration and frequency of the worry are disproportionate to the issue and interferes with the sufferer's performance of tasks and ability to concentrate.

Sometimes it's emotionally paralyzing

Stew- Funny, I was thinking the same thing about GAD, and how close it is to OCD.

Worrying about finances, security, your future to the point of parylization. Purchases for me were sometimes almost impossible. They included research that went beyond the normal realm, and into every facet and detail of the item. Trying to just "go buy a new jacket" was impossible. Weighing cost versus benefit, will you find a better deal, will it last, etc, etc.

I still don't typically buy anything unless I know what I want quite specifically, but at least I'm not obsessive about the research on most stuff anymore. I mean, does it really matter the difference in toilet paper?

Recognition of the problem is definitely the first step to addressing and dealing with it. It's certianly not fun!

This describes my symptoms to a tee. For many years I self medicated then I was diagnosed with PTSD and was given meds for this condition. My life changed for the good that day and I am happy most all the time without a care in the world. The meds have almost made it go away completely.

The only thing that causes me problems now are following a high stress of some kind. Seldom does it last long. I manage my life so as to avoid stressful situations.

My wife has this. The thing that drives me crazy is that she uses those antiseptic wipes and always wants me to wash my hands as soon as I walk in the door, yet when she cooks in the kitchen, half the food ends up on the countertops and floor, and stays there until I say something or clean it up myself. The bathroom is the same with makeup/etc. I think I have a small amount of the OCD myself, as this drives me nuts.

I don't understand how someone can walk around in thier kitchen and bathroom stepping on food/etc, and yet be so obsessed with clean hands, and clothes.

Yes, I still love her to death. I guess it is one of those things that makes her unique.

I am also a nut when it comes to alarm clocks. Not necessarily for work, but on weekends I set both alarms on my clock, 7 minutes apart, since the snooze is seven minutes. This way if I hit snooze or turn it off, the second alarm goes off. On top of that, I set the alarm clock on my cell phone in case the power goes out and the backup battery fails....

5 years ago my power went out and I ruined a hunt for three other guys. I had the decoys etc and I was a noshow. Never again! Drives my wife crazy, but I wake up all the time at night checking the alarm clock before fishing trips, just to see if its time to get up yet. I find myself usually waking up right before the alarm clock goes off anyway. Weird huh?

I do the same thing usually within a couple minutes of when the clock should go off. It's never on work days though only before fishing/hunting trips. It's a little freaky when you think about how well your subconcious can keep time.

A good friend of mine has this and I have alot of fun with it, but then again I am a little dislexic as well as blonde and may have a touch of ADD as well as BiPolar so here go I. I do think god made us all different so we could poke at each other.

Just watched a biography about Howie Mandel. He has OCD and he has it bad! The kind where he can't touch anything anyone else has touched, because of the germs that might be there. The show described how he was able to hide it for many, many years until one time he was on the Howard Stern Show and as he left the studio at the end of his appearance on the show, he had to open the door to leave and someone else had just used the door. He was trying to use his elbows to get out and Stern noticed him and started doing the Stern attack on him about it. Brought him back into the studio and talked to him for 3 more hours about it. Howie was not that happy about the whole episode.

Stern is such a jerk!

Anyway- amazed to hear how many have to struggle with this in their daily lives. Thought you might find some comfort in the company of a famous person who found a way to cope and indeed thrive in the face of this condition.

Ducky, I think you married my ex-wife!
