pfmc meeting
I have unofficial word that PFMC meeting went very well.
This is from someone who attended the meeting today. Again still unofficial, but it appears it went well. To those who attended great job.
From the sounds of it, those who took the time to get involved, signed petitions, and attended meetings were listened to.
Hopefully more good news soon.

Re: pfmc meeting
Sounds like the PFMC voted on Option #1...against the wishes of NOAA. Look like we got an inter-governmental showdown.

Re: pfmc meeting
My brother, also there, said the same thing, said we should be proud of our F&G, and the Gov.
Again thanks to those who took the time to get involved, attend, and/or sign petitions.

Re: pfmc meeting
I'm going to be cynical for a moment and put this in the perspective of "every politician's dream." The Gov can fight the good fight for his people, and if he wins, he's a hero. If he loses, it was "the feds" that did it, and he can say he did his best against impossible odds. For him it's a win-win deal.
But.... this is the same Gov who is trying to shove the Marine Sanctuary idea down our throats, over the protests of the very people he put in place to railroad it through.
He's a politician - and I don't trust him.

Somehow you say it such nicer than me, Thanks.
Like I said before....good job F&G, but I wouldn't trust certain politicians to lick postage stamps.

Re: pfmc meeting
So Jim, how would you compare his "trustworthiness" to.....hhmmm....how about.....Tom Delay?
Or how about Arnold? Our fishing bretheren in California are screaming bloody murder that Arnold won't lift his finger to do ANYTHING to help CA fishers...sport or commercial. Arnold, nor anyone in his office, will not return any messages on the subject. He didn't even send anyone to the PFMC meeting, which was a few miles from his office.

Re: pfmc meeting
These are some recent posts from California sportfishers....referring to our Oregon delegation at the PFMC meeting in Sacramento. Our delegation includes Curt Melcher (the "salmon guy" at ODFW), and Frank Warrens, who many of us salty dogs have been supporting. Read on:
-----------------------------------------------
Where Was Our Governor Today?
I was impressed that Oregon sent their Director of Fish and Game to make a presentation to the PFMC. His opening remarks were a message from the Oregon Governor that "We need a fishing season." The Governor also is declaring an economic disaster for commercial fishers which gets them on the list for Federal relief according to the Mangnason Stevenon Act. Kudos for Oregon's Governor for taking a stand and sending a strong message.
Where was Arnie's message? Or was his lack of a message the message that he doesn't give a shi#! I think we ought to barrage Arnie with email telling him to get off the fence and take a stand for California's citizens.

Today's Meeting
Reply
I'm not sure how to respond to everything that happened today. If the PFMC recommendation holds true this was a very great effort by all. I left the meeting wondering which way the vote might go. When I got home and saw the report from Chris Hall, that the PFMC voted for option 1, I was ectatic. I called everyone that I fish with and gave them the good news. I'm bothered by the DFG person who abstained. Great to see we're represnted by our own. The gentleman who spoke for Oregon Fish and Wildlife was awesome. California Fish and Game could use more people like him. F&G don't ask me for another penny if you won't even stand up for our rights to fish. So many people hit the nail on the head.

My Letter to the Governor
I sent this to the Governor and DFG this morning. I urge you to email them too if you have an opinion on their perfomance at the PFMC meeting. --
Dear Governor,
The absense of our California Governor was glaring at yesterday's hearing at the PFMC meeting in Sacramento. Oregon's Governor sent a strong message to the PFMC and NOAA that we need a salmon season. Where was our Governor? Where was our Governors message?
DFG is at the table as a representative of California. California absolutely got upstaged by Oregon today. From my viewpoint California looked terribly disinterested and lackluster.
I hope the Governor and the DFG take the Salmon Crisis seriously and send a strong message to the PFMC and NOAA. Final vote on this matter will be this Thursday or Friday at the Doubletree in Sacramento.
Stand up for California!
Gary W. Phillips

IN OREGON
-----------------------------------------------------------
Our plan of turning up the heat started to pay off today. It has been generating comments from people on the hill, and even a couple letters Pombo etc, but yesterday in a meeting called by the California Delegation it got ugly when they had NOAA testify on the salmon closure and their statement of holding the line on no fishing. Things got out of control quickly with screaming and yelling at NOAA. Our fly on the wall even reported a member from Oregon calling NOAA incompetent and stupid

Re: pfmc meeting
The loss of one fishing season pales when held up alongside the rumblings I hear about Marine Sanctuaries and MPA's. Let's see how it goes over the next couple of years.
For now, I'll stand by my post - and watch.
PS. Califonia doesn't have a governor. They have an actor who is making a movie where he plays the governor of California. Kind of like "Kindergarten Cop" only with older children.

Re: pfmc meeting
Does anyone else find this whole situation totally ironic in light of the Columbia River springer debacle?
There we had sportsfisherman yelling about how gill netters and commercial guys kill all the wild fish, and as sportsmen "we would never do that, the fish always comes first". We had guides that started boycotts against a retailers and distributor based on their personal animosity.
Now we have the commercial guys shut down, and the sportfishers trying to keep a season open because it's "only a few Klamath fish". We have Gov. K and the OR F&G being hailed as heros for their stance by people in California.....Whoa! I'm glad that Teddy K. appears to care now, but excuse me if I still don't have a lot of faith.
And in all of this, how much interest is there on the main board? Any? Not really. I just looked 3 pages back and not even a peep. Doesn't effect the Portland market, or Buoy 10 that much, so apparently it doesn't matter. Where's the guys that were up in arms about the Gill netting?
Where are the big name guides that claim to care about all the fish in Oregon for the "right" reasons, not just the ones that effect their pocketbook? I don't see them talking too much.
I hate to be cynical like Jim, but it's hard not to be when peoples true colors show.

QUOTE [Our fly on the wall even reported a member from Oregon calling NOAA incompetent and stupid]... I like this guy, whoever he was..
Mark Mc... don't you think Jims point is still valid, no matter what Arnold does. Today we can be glad of what Ted did, next week I am afriad he will be back to Sanctuaries...which will devistate the fishery FOREVER and not just one or two seasons.
Remember..."it is NOT what people do, but WHY they do it."
I will stand on the bridge and yell, all day..."I am so sorry Ted for thinking bad things about you". ...if he indeed has changed his mind set.
I am kind of feeling bad about being hard on the ODFW now, sorry.

Re: pfmc meeting
My guess on the guides sitting this one out is fact that the bay fisheries will boom this year due to no ocean harvest...less fuel, less risk, double trips per day...easy to sit on the side lines when you win either way.
On the bright side Nalu...look for me to be booking some Tuna fun...

Re: pfmc meeting
Not to try and de-rail this string, but regaring the Sanctuary comments by Skein and Wak - about the only 'good news' I heard at the last OPAC meeting was in the closing minutes of the meeting it appeared the Marine Sactuary Proposal was loosing favor with the OPAC Board - even the Gov's rep said a suggestion of NO was acceptable as an option !?! so maybe a glimmer of hope on that front too.
Not a done deal, 'cuz I expect OPAC to continue working on SOME ocean protection proposal - just I personally doubt it will be in the form of a Sanctuary - the risk was just too high. But you are right - we need to keep watching / attending OPAC meetings to help them arrive their decision.

I would sure like to see somebody do a short spread sheet,
say on the last 30years of Salmon Seasons, listing open days fished and quotas and actual fish harvested..........
Both Sport and Commercial. No doubt the raw data is listed somewhere.
These seasons and quotas are somewhat cyclical in nature, they have put lots of good folks out of business
for 50 years. I remember 1 and 2 week seasons not that long ago.

Re: pfmc meeting
Dave, now THAT is a scary thought.
BTW, it's a little amusing how easy a discussion can turn into a big FOR / AGANIST debate.
All I am saying is......in this PFMC / Salmon issue our ODFW & PFMC reps did us proud....AND....Governor K. apparently did stand up for us, and for the coastal economy.
Is it such a bad thing to give credit where it is due?

Re: pfmc meeting
Boys, boys, boys, isn't it true that in politics, you can't always get what you want? In law, we say a good settlement is one that nobody likes. So, as Mark said, let's give credit to Ted for sticking up for us on this issue, even if he is exploring sanctuaries, which he may not get anyway. So, why bash him after he stuck up for us here? As many have said, it is more than Ahhhhhhhhnold did for the Golden Staters.
Now, we have a situation where the Secretary of Commerce must approve any recreational season and he is a Bush appointee. So, now the Bush administration, which, arguably, was the immediate but not necessarily total cause of this current crisis, must make a decision whether to give us a season. Politics is definitely a mess and I'd rather be fishing. So, maybe, Bush can do the right thing for us. Ted did.
