Default Cedar plug rigging

Hey guys,
I got some of the Charkbait specials while I was at the Fred Hall show as well as some needle point Mustads. I have plenty of heavy mono, swivels, etc,....
I'm looking for info. on how to attach the leader, heavy mono., to the hook so that it fits inside the tail of the plug.
Surely some of you have rigged these plugs before and would be willing to share your rigging tips.
I was unable to find info on a Salty Dog search.
Thanks,
Beeeeee

Edsr had a new way to do this. He used a wire and made a plug out of the body by hanging a hook on one end of the wire, through the body and a loop on the front end to attach the leader.

I use the Jinkai 'H' crimp and 100# Maxima. Just form a simple loop with the hook in it and crimp. Use a perfect loop for the rod end of the leader. Adjust the hook placement with the size of the hook loop.

It works but you have to gaff the fish as the leader will break if you swing em into the boat. I would not use this light leader on oa handline either or you will break off.

Because of the small diameter bore of the plug, a crimp is the best way to have the connection neatly fit inside. I have used a knot in a pinch, but it gets jammed up in there pretty tight.

With a crimp, not only does it slide in easily, after a hookup the plug can come loose (slide up the leader) so the plug is less likely to lever the hook out of the fish.

KB - When you use mono with a crimp the hook tends to wear the loop and cause a weak spot. The mono works fine if you inspect it occasionally. By rigging with heavy SS wire to the hook and through the plug to a swivel you solve two problems, line twist and hook wear. Be sure to use a Haywire twist when attaching the hook and swivel to avoid 90' bends which crystalize and break. You can adjust the length of the wire to inspect the hook loop, etc.

Edsr, try a chafing spring. I use them on most of my crimps.

Would shrink tubbing work. I would think it would make a tight fit over the neddle hook.

KB, as other's have said, edsr uses wire to attach the hook.

I had a friend who makes spinners, so brainstormed with him and borrowed his wire forming tool to rig mine up. Now just need some cooperative seas and fish to go and try them out.

Dave, I've heard that a one inch length of 1/16" polyethylene tubing from a hobby store works very well. It's cheap, so I'll be using it on all my crimps when joining mono to a hook. Thread on a crimp, go through the tubing, then through to hook. Push the tubing into the eye of the hook halfway. Put your leader back through the crimp, and melt it so a small ball forms on the tag end. Pull your leader so the ball snugs up against the crimp and your tubing is touching the crimp on both sides, then crimp.

I'll be using this technique for rigging mono to any terminal tackle, halibut rigs, clones, what have you. For the cedar plugs, clones, etc, I'll crimp on a swivel to the other end, again with poly tubing to prevent chafing. This wasn't my idea, by the way. One of the mods from another board told me how to do it.

So, where do you find chafing springs?

Firsherman's Marine (Delta Park) sells them next to the tuna lures.

Or Meltons, or Offshore Angler, or Charkbait. Pretty common stuff.

How about using a gimbal like the TUNA clone tech tip? A crimped gimbal wouldn't chafe and would have plenty of room not to bind. It's a little money but nothing when compared to other expenses in a TUNA! run.
