? about the Blitz and other charters
Greetings,
My brother and I are planning on taking our dad (60th B-day) out on a charter trip in August. My brother lives in Portland, so we will probably be headed out of Astoria or Newport.
We have always wanted to do the tuna thing, but I have heard that if you go out on a charter, that it's mainly a handline game. Is this true? What percentage of the fishing would be on a stand up rod?
I have always heard good things about the Blitz, but would be open to other suggetions. Anyone been on one of these trips?
Joe

Re: ? about the Blitz and other charters
Mike on the Blitz does use rod & reel. In addition he has outriggers with handlines that he may or may not use on a given day.
Since it is a special occasion, you might also think about a 6 pack / 4 pack boat.....Mikey "Nalu" for example.
A little more intimate than having 12 or 15 people.

Re: ? about the Blitz and other charters
We are fishing live bait on light tackle out of Warrenton with good Albacore on the trips. I do 12hr trips on a fast 43' Delta {Lady Dee} so you get a great amount of wet line time. Call or e-mail if you are interested. Started fishing out the Columbia in 1965 so its not my first rodeo. Thanks Capt.Gene

Birdnest,
Capt. Gene is out of the Astoria area if that's where you want to fish. You can't miss on a memorable experience with either one. Capt. Gene or Nalu are both first class charters.

Re: ? about the Blitz and other charters
My wife and I fished off the Blitz a short time after the taky two (spelling) went down and my wife asked about the PFD and the capt. told her that if she thought she need one then maybe this was not the boat for her.(embaressd) We went and fished but never again on the Blitz. Maybe a bad day for the capt. but wrong thing to say to a lady on a boat I think.

Re: ? about the Blitz and other charters
My thanks to everyone for the nice recommendations.
Birdsnest- I think you can see that you have a number of good choices! I know I've heard good things about The Blitz, as well as Gene from Tackle Time.
There is always a tradeoff, so consider what you are looking for.
We run a small boat, that takes a maximum of 4 anglers for tuna. What some people enjoy is that the experience is basically the same as you would get fishing with one of the Salty Dogs from this board. You are actively involved in setting lines, looking for fish, and other aspects of the day. You are always in the middle of everything.
You also have to consider that a small boat does not always make it offshore like a big boat. We are more likely to cancel days because the weather is bad or marginal. With a large charter, you can fish in heavier weather. We also may cancel a trip due to a lack of fish in the area. If I think the fishing is poor, I always advise our customers and let them decide if they want to try and find the fish.
I think you'll find the fishing abilities of all the charters mentioned as being top notch, so whoever you choose to go with, you won't have to worry about that.
Good luck!

Re: ? about the Blitz and other charters
FP, I can't for one minute believe Mike said that. Captain Mike runs a tight, safe ship and to my firsthand knowledge has always been professional. Over teh years I have been able to recommend the Blitz without reservation. Well, maybe the one you have to call to make but I have never been concerned that he was unsafe in any way.
As mentioned, any of the charters listed would be excellent.

Re: ? about the Blitz and other charters
The biggest downside to fishing on a cozy 4-pack with Nalu is that....you will get to smell his cologne. Hope you like it.
