Building an AR-15
Okay, so I've decided to build an AR-15.
Can you guys share your recommendations on where to buy the parts (websites, local dealers, directly from Rock River or Bushmaster or ????, etc.)?
Someone mentioned about bidding to get an upper; what are some auction sites that are good sources for parts?
Thanks.

I saw a few good lowers that would make a good start, but if you go to sportsmans they should have a complete catalog so you can pick out barrels and such.
good luck and post when you are done.

So what style/flavor have you decided on?

Re: Building an AR-15
I think a pretty basic one for the first build; fixed butt stock, A3 20" upper (although I'm debating about a 16"), Houge grip, JP adjustable trigger. At this point I'm still in the "what's out there and what's the best way to go" phase, and still looking for recommendations.
Can someone tell me what the term "M4 type" means?

An M4 type or M4gery is as close to this as most of us will ever see:
Basically a civilian copy or reproduction of the select fire M4 issued to our troops. Cosmetically the same, just missing the happy switch.

Re: Building an AR-15
Dont forget to check out olympic arms. I have an oly with a 20" A2 style upper reviever and I love it . I know a lot of people who use these and they are very reliable and high quality. You can look at their online catalog and even order individual parts. Heres the link: <Sorry, no non-sponsor links allowed. Please review the user agreement.>

Re: Building an AR-15
get an upper from Frank White or John Holliger. I'd post links but I think that's against the user agreement, so PM me if you'd like either or do a search.
The two of them probably account for 75% of the medals at Camp Perry that are won with service rifles.
Rock River is a good choice for out of the box but their recent quality is slipping.
regards, aw.

Re: Building an AR-15
Hawk; Get out there on the net and look at the named recvr. manufacturers in both the recent threads here.On the M4 the contour dia. varies. The lower recv'r. is the control part that IDs the firearm thus needs a FFL for shipment.
Parts kits and uppers can be purchased sent directly to customer.
To build follow the build site listed in previous thread. you will need several inexpensive tools, see bushmasters.
Is listing Bushmasters name a AUP violation???Good luck

Re: Building an AR-15
Bushmaster makes good components, but I can't say that I'd recommend building one from components. You can probably find an assembled gun for a cheaper price and not have to deal with fitting the components.

Re: Building an AR-15
Might be able to get a Bushmaster rifle for $710-$750 but the thrill of assembly is hard to describe, ha..
Kit $509
Lower $200
FFL $30

Re: Building an AR-15
What do you guys recommend for chambering? 223 or 5.56?
One post said that a barrel chambered for 5.56 can shoot both 223/5.56, but the accuracy suffers. Is it enough for a plinker like me to notice when shooting yotes or rats?
Is 5.56 ammo cheaper than 223 ammo?
