Re: Why Do We Sit In Fishless Hoglines All Day?
There are a lot of fun things to do out there, but I really cannot think of any that are better than fishing. Even on a slow day. Other things to ponder when you ask why you sit out there all day on a fishless day:
1) You left early once and your leaving must have stirred up the fish because your next time out all your hogline buddies could talk about was how good the fishing was AFTER you left. Never again.
2) Gas prices are only going higher and all the gas you burned in your rig AND your boat is not worth fishing for only half a day.
3) The people down at the golf course get ***** when you take up eight parking spot with your truck and boat.
4) No matter how much you wash your hands it still makes your golf gloves smell like rancid herring.
5) Your legs fell asleep hour ago and you don't want to stand up and risk falling over in front of the others.
6) Two donuts left, and coffee is at least luke warm.
7) Best anchoring job you've ever done, and you'd hate to pull anchor so soon.
8) Just one more bait-up. Okay, just one more. This one WILL be the last one. Okay, I'm serious this time...
9) Best sleep you've gotten in ages, and you are thinking about sleeping in boat permanently.
10) Dry lines don't catch fish.

Re: Why Do We Sit In Fishless Hoglines All Day?
I think for me RT it's the anticipation.....the rush when that pole does go down or you hit it square and it goes 300+.......The past Thursday's and Friday's we have gotten fish and i plan to catch one tomorrow too ! I get up real early and get the spot that i want, not where i end up in a hog line and i think it makes a difference that way.....And of course just being out on the water with good people brings me back.

Re: Why Do We Sit In Fishless Hoglines All Day?
Cus we love to fish and the man above was right if we leave everybody else will catch fish and if I can't get one then neither can they,or maybe its because we've got a really good book to read,or we have to many honey dues to do and we need to get our thoughts squared away,or maybe cus we'er NUTs,I mean we do fish in freezing cold weather just hopeing for a bite or two and we do get up at all hrs of the morning to go fishing, and we do drive for 27 hrs straight just to get to a good fishing hole,so we must be NUTS.Me,I just love fishing !!!!!

We all love to fish, if you are the one that has the boat, the captian, who most of the time has to doge other boats, keep the baits at the right angle, the main worker, soo your budies can fish, well a long day relaxing in a hog line is just great.

Re: Why Do We Sit In Fishless Hoglines All Day?
My problem is that I never realize that its been all day. Just this last week I started the morning with one quick takedown, missed it , of course, and then reset my rig for the anticipated followup bite. As I anxiously waited, I noticed the boats next to us pulling up anchor and taking off. I mentioned to my partner,"They must work swing at the mill. Too bad they are takin' off with so much good tide to run yet." He paused and then asked,"What time do you think it is, anyway?" I responed, "well, no later than noon...12:30 at the latest." I was then informed that it was 4:19 and the tide had about quit. I could NOT believe it. I am now actually thinking about attaching my boat seat and rod holder to my desk at work.Best I can figure ...my 12 years to retirement will only seem like an hour and a half.
You know, I don't think I've ever been skunked yet....I just run out of tide. (Yes, its a ripoff from an old football quote.)

Re: Why Do We Sit In Fishless Hoglines All Day?
How else can I justify the cost of the boat and truck to the wife if I'm not gone all day?!?!?!
Besides, when I look out the back of the boat, that's the biggest and best big screen I know of!
EAT, SLEEP, FISH!

Re: Why Do We Sit In Fishless Hoglines All Day?
RT I dont know about you but i tried pulling up one day on a ripping tide and i didnt have a anchor puller then . I found it a lot easier to wait for the tide to stop!!! I have quite a few memories of great fishing the last 30 min of tide. One was supper day I put a clam spoon on and back to back 40lbs plus fish. For some reason that fond memory -I always wait. TUB

Why Do We Sit In Fishless Hoglines All Day?
I read a rececnt post in which a member desribed fishing in a Columbia hogline (I think for the first time after hearing of all the big hogs being caught this year). He said they fished the entire day, as did most of the line, without ever seeing a fish caught. I've done this a few times so please dont take this Q as a dis. Just curiousity. I know the camraderie is fun for awhile. But we continue to sit there staring at motionless rods all day. Why? Why not move around and try something else? Why not give up the ghost early that day and go golfing or some other fun thing? Again, this is not a dis! But I have sat there in situations like that, with no boats or hoglines in sight catching any fish all day, and it occassionally strikes me LOL as an absurdity. Same thing with golf on those worm burner days. Absurd? Or what? What makes us do this? Just curious. - RT

Re: Why Do We Sit In Fishless Hoglines All Day?
I am re-enlightened. Thanks, I needed that! - RT - Figuring out why we golf is going to be harder I think. Maybe "Just do it. Don't ask why"? Oh, and why do we work? To pay for the things we don't know why we are doing. Why did I bring this up? Because I'm so rummy tired from my trip I'm drooling on myself.
