Default Identifying Yellow Eye

I've not found any good identification info -- to help discriminate yellow eye from similar looking red and orange rockfish. Any good info would be appreciated. thx.

Get a hold of "OCEAN". They have some ID cards that haveb great pictures of all the fish you are talking about and the ways to id all! Do a search here and you should find it!

Or stop by the South Beach Marina in Newport or any Englund Marine and pick up a laminated ID card - courtesy of Oregon Coalition for Educating ANglers (the OCEAN)

Thanks a ton -- hurts tho, as I see now that my brother in law landed a 20+ lb vermillion rock fish last year, and took it for a yellow eye.

Another good book is "Guide to Norhteast Pacific Rockfishes" by Donald E. Kramer and Victoria M O'Connell. I see the fish checkers and osp using the same book. This is a good way to stay on the same page as them and its reasonably priced. It is a laminated book so you can take it in you boat and slime it up. It has great color pics of all fish and then drawings that break down charesterics.

Check it out

With some experience you can see the difference in color (shades of orange) between a yelloweye, a vermillon, and a canary.

Besides the body coloration though, the one telltale sign is the yellow eye of the yelloweye (gee fancy that!).
