Default S&W M&P pistols

Has anyone got any experience with the (apparently) new M&P line of semi-auto pistols from S&W?

They are hammerless, with a magazine safety and a comparatively small grip for a 40cal, although I'm looking for a 9mm.

I was playing with one last night, Didn't shoot it, just checked it over. It reminded me of the Sigma pistols. I like the idea of the changeable grip size, but I hate the stamped steel slide release and the trigger. I don't think I'll be buying one, but that's just my opinion.

I'm new to semi-autos, so could you explain the significance of a stamped steel slide release compared to other types of slide releases?

Thanks.
