My long skunk continues. Got skunked last week, felt like I needed to get back on the horse this week, so I went to Three Rivers. Nothing during the morning. Checked out the Nestucca. Again, nothing. So I went back to Three Rivers.
I wanted to fish the tailout of the pool upstream of the USFS office, but someone else was fishing it, so I fished the head. Nothing. After awhile the guy fishing the tailout left, so I went to check it out. There was a nice steelhead holding about five feet from the bank where he had been standing. And he'd been casting across the river the whole time! Sometimes you just gotta look down. It's so close I can see its missing its adipose, and probably is a female. So if figure if I know where the fish is, it sure beats getting skunked casting where I can't see anything. So I work on this fish for about an hour. I go easy, so as not to spook it, and start off light. I put on a dark rubber worm with no wait. No interest. A jig, no bobber. No interest. I do see it rise to the surface twice like it's taking bugs off the surface, but there are no bugs. By now it's getting to be around 4:30, so I finally tie on a spinner and gently work it in front of the fish. Finally, at one point the blade stops spinning, and I lose track of it while it's in front of the fish. Then I see the fish's mouth open. On instinct, I set the hook. Bingo! It's on! Beatutiful olive on the top, shiny silver on the sides, splash of red around the gills! It moves out into the current a bit, then turns and heads directly downstream. I hate it when they do that, expecially when there are trees in the way and I can't follow it. So I elect instead to tighten the drag. And it's still peeling line. I know that if I tighten it any more, it might break, but if it keeps taking line, it will get into heavier current, and I'm toast anyway. So I tighten it just a tad more as it starts to exit the pool and enter the rapids and.... snap!
So my skunk is still on, with no fish landed since October.
