Ground Squirrel and other Varmints in E Oregon

I would appreciate any info on where to go to do some ground squirrel, prarie dog or coyote shooting in Eastern Oregon. Spoke with a few guys about it and it sounds like good rifle practice and a way to gedt rid of a few pests at the same time.

Interested in times of the year, place to hunt...camp.

Haven't done it yet, but have followed numerous threads on iFish about it.

As to time of year, now is the start of it. Basically, when the snow is off the ground and the sun starts warming things into the 50+ range they start coming out.

Where: pretty much any place in central and eastern Oregon where they grow crops such as alfalfa, but even in other areas as well. But, places closer to Portland get more hunting pressure and are less productive as time goes on.

There are some places to go in the White River Management area near Dufur for Groung Squirrels. They're all over during the summer.

Fourth of July weekend (2007) I was in and around Dalles / Dufur area.
I did more driving than hunting. Drove over 350 miles.
Was able to get 4 shots off in Public land, Locate 2 missed 1 and the other was a good 6 inch in the hole as it laid there.
Most of the grave diggers (Ground Squirrels I saw (over100+) were in private lands or next to roads.


Did manage to see several spiked bucks, Does, 1 badger, 1 fox, 1 coyote, lots of quails in private lands. I drove mainly on the three, five, seven and eight-mile roads.

Great way to burn some time...and gas. We logged a fair number of miles in the fall doing the same thing, and had a good time with my 17 year old son!
