who taught ya???
Just curious to know how everyone got involved in flyfishing or the story invloved.....
I remeber I was about 8 or 9 and fishing small creeks over hear on the east side. I wanted a longer pole to drop the worms right where I wanted them and I soon discovered an old eagle claw fly rod in the garage. The first time I took it out I used a small spinning reel on the 5 weight that would work out perfectly for small creeks. Christmas came and went and my dad recieved an orvis battenkill reel that he put away because he never flyfished. I got that orvis reel out and exchanged it for the spinning reel. The rod took on a whole new feeling. A few more times with worms and I had an itching to try this thing called "flyfishing". I stood in the yard for hours upon hour just playin around. I soon developed a very good cast and went and purchased my first fly ever, a wooly bugger. I cant even remember how many fish I caught with that single black bugger . As the years would go on I would develop a taste for new rods and reels and a sense of adventure that I could go anywhere and catch a fish on a fly. New techkniques such as high'stickin, dry flys, skaters, swingin would enter my bag of tricks. It wasnt long before all I did was fly fish especialy for trout. The "gentlemans" sport caught me and my friend and we would later invest in companies such as winston, Ross reels, st. croix, sage, william & joseph and we looked down upon those who didnt wave a fly rod. We have since grown outta that stage and appreciate others who are skilled at what they do. I have since visited Wyoming, Montana, Lots of Eastern Oregon in pursuit of trout with my rod.
I thought it would be neat to see how some of us got their start. I look at all the destinations fly-fishing has taken me and all the memories and I wouldnt trade it for anything, having taught myself to flyfish out of neccesity it amazes me how the sport has snowballed in my life.
anyone else have a neat story??

Re: who taught ya???
As a person who started fishing with a spinning rod, I always had trouble paying attention if it was with a bobber or just loosing interest in casting a spinner in the river over and over again, I have since grown out of that, it might have been ADD.
I was about 13, my father isn't a big fly fisherman but he and I were on the Deschutes on day and were at a little riffle. He broke out his old fly rod and showed me how to cast and we put on a dry fly, luckily I didn't have to cast very far. It took a little practice and before I knew it I hooked fish about every cast. I was hooked, pardon the pun. It was a way for me to pay attention on every cast and have something else to do while fishing. I think he was suprised about how much I liked it and he got me my entry level rod and reel and we've had several outings and I'm getting him to fly fish more.

Re: who taught ya???
I was 40 before I picked up a flyrod, Silverfly taught me the how tos....Sure was sore the first few times I went out....6 hours of flinging a rod in the air makes one sore, esp when you have poor technique due to using your arms and shoulders instead of letting the rod do the work....what is loading anyways....hehe...

Re: who taught ya???
I started about 6 years ago when a friend of mine gave me an entry level fly combo for my birthday.... he kinda taught me the basics and I caught a few fish on Benson lake over the summer. Then I started catching steelhead on drift gear and fly fishing was not a big priority anymore... That was until I realized that you can fly fish for steelhead That was last year and I've been steelheading with a fly pole most of the time since... I just bought a new trout rod and I'll be picking that up again soon...

S_B, once you start catching steelhead flyfishing on a regular basis, you will be really "hooked".

Re: who taught ya???
My son, indirectly taught me how to flyfish.
Two years ago, he was bugging me to take him fishing and as I was getting out the spinning rods, I ran across my old 7wt Eagle Claw fiberglass rod that I paid $50 for almost 20 years ago.
I never did learn to fish with it and only got it because a buddy of mine was getting into flyfishing. I think I took it out once and put it away never to be touched again.
As I was going through everything, I started to think that I really did want to learn, so I signed up for a class and the rest is history.
So, I do owe a great deal of my learning to my son, who just wanted to go fishing.

Re: who taught ya???
My dad taught me- He has fly fished forever- I started when I was about 2- (I'll try to find some pics) I never fly fished for steelhead with it until a year ago- My cousin finally talked me into it and holy crap- Once you hook into one with a fly rod you will never think about anything else!!

Re: who taught ya???
A good friend started me out in 1979. I used ultra-lights with small spinners, or single eggs on a local river, and knew the river well. He knew how to toss flies, and wanted a closer river between trips to the big D. So we helped each other out. Thousands of hours later he still outfishes me every trip. The guy is just uncanny! I hate him, but still fish with him every chance I get. And learn something every time.

Re: who taught ya???
Oh I know who thinks he taught me how to fly fish but the real "culprit" is a good friend who, back in 1973, taught me to cast, tie flies, wrap rods and other skills. He was like a big brother to me and I appreciate to this day.
