Default Scope Placement

Trying to figure out which scope I should put on which rifle. Suggestions? I can't figure out which of my scopes to put on my 2 main hunting rifles. I have a 300wsm and a 25-06 and a B&L Elite 3000 3x9 and a Buschnell Elite 4200 4-16, both 40mm. Which scope would you think would benefit which rifle the most. I can't buy a new scope right now. I got the 4200 a while ago and have not placed it on anything yet, and currently have the 3000 on my 300wsm.

Putting the 4200 scope on the rifle without the scope (300wsm) is definitely the path of least resistance.

I also understand wanting to put the highest zoom scope on the longest/flatest shooting rifle. Then you could ask yourself which scope will take the shock/recoil better? Is the 4200 a higher quality scope than the 3200?

Another thing to consider is the higher (>7x) zoom settings are often unusable in anything other than bright light - especially since they both have the same objective (40 mm). You don't have bright light in most real hunting oportunities -- which are typically early morning or late afternoon/evening, or dark timber. For daytime shooting at the range -- not so much of an issue.

It seems like a personal preference. If I had time to sight in both rifles -- I'd probably put the 4-16x40 on the 300wsm, and the 3-9x40 on the 25-06.

Cheers,

Put the higher-power (4200) on the 25-06....likely to be the long-distance shooter.
The 300WSM will do both but I would see it being your 'in closer' rifle.

That "feels" right to me but you could go either way.

They are both long range shooters. Put the higher power scope on the one you plan on shooting further or at smaller targets.

Put the 4200 on the 25-06, thats your long range gun and you'll need the increased magnification.

Fish Wheels,
I feel for ya. Tough one, I KNOW you want the 4-16 on the 300WSM don't ya?!?!? I would too. So do it. Throw the 3-9x on the .25-05 for now and pick up a 6-24x EL4200 for the .25-06 later down the road (or some .22-250 ya just gotta get ). Did ya ever get that Mini-14??...put the 3-9x on it.

I do want the 4-16 on my 300wsm and will probably do just that. I was looking to see if anybody had a good argument for not. It will come in handy for Bear this summer and fall. Maybe by the time deer season comes around I can get the same scope for my 25-06. IMO they both shoot long distance equally well, approx same drop with the bullets I shoot. 180 for 300wsm and 110 for 25-06 . I already have a 22-250 setup and sold my Mini-14 that I had for 10 yrs and am going to get an AR this year.

Thanks for all the responses.
