Pete
I think I would go with a Marine VHF radio. If you need help, the coast guard monitors CH16. I have a hand held unit I like to keep in my pocket, should I fall out of the boat it comes with me GPS in other pocket so I can call them in on me, while treading water. I have an ICOM M3A which I also use hunting (less than legal off the water) 6 AA batteries, last days, not guaranteed waterproof, but awful close. About $170 +/-, lots of good models out there. West marine at Delta Park had the most models when I was shopping.
A CB radio might get you the "rubber duck" if you are close to a highway.

Warning to Boaters: Look out for a 21 ft White, 1966 Starcraft Inboard with windshield and Bentleys top.

Congrats! Pete, hope you and family have many happy hours with it and you catch lots of fish! What is it they say - "A man is just an overgrown boy except that his toys cost more"!. Well, we all need a new toy once in awhile, don't we? I'm about to get mine ready for the bays on the west side so might see you there one of these days.
Take care,

I agree w/ B.O.E. about the dependability of a Marine band vs. Citizens band radio. In my opinion, don't waste your money on a CB for your boat.

Default Got The Boat - CB Radio question

You know that boat that I have been posting questions on lately? IT IS IN MY DRIVEWAY!

I am really excited about the fishing and family fun prospects that this will provide.
Now it is time to accessorize, and I am thinking I should get a CB radio in it.

How about a few suggestions on what brands, features , power, etc. I should look for...

I am stoked, and thanks for all the help to those that provided responses to my earlier posts on the boat (and B.O.E. also)!!

Thanks-a-bunch

PeterMac
