Cougar Contest OHA
I've learned that OHA has a members only cougar contest.
This is a great idea and I think all Oregon Hunters ought to be a part of OHA. On the other hand i think OHA would do well to have the cougar contest be open to all legal hunters.
I think it could prove to encourage the taking of more cougars in Oregon while bringing OHA to the attention of a lot of unaware hunters.
I'll be away from any Internet the next few days so I won't be able to do any dialog on this for a while.

Re: Cougar Contest OHA
Cool, hooray! I think the ODFW should give a cougar tag to everyone free when they buy thier license. Or just demote them to varmint status....no tag required!

Re: Cougar Contest OHA
I always thought a cougar killed was in self defense. Guess some of us have a reason to actually buy a tag now.

Re: Cougar Contest OHA
I wonder if the contest being open to all Hunters in Oregon wouldn't serve OHA members and non-members better.
Im think OHA would draw more bees with honey than vinegar. OHA creates this contest that could easily promote the buying on cougar tags. OHA could involve the manufactures of FoxPro calls to help fund the prizes. There could be many sponcers to the contest.
Joining OHA seems to me like a natural thing for a hunter to do. This OHA Cougar contest (as it is) communicates to me that a hunter needs some cougar contest as a final insentive to join OHA. I think OHA would give their associations name more notice and hence more members joining with an open COntest of this type.
Anyone else see what I'm thinking here ? By the way tomorrow! I leave land änd the Internet for 4 days.

Re: Cougar Contest OHA
i see what your saying, but when running a nonprofit organization. there are rules of operation that restrict some actions to members only. is this contest one, i do not know, but being a member should have benifits. having member only contests, works for me, as a benifit. to run an open hunting contest in oregon has some legal issues, that i think will kill it.

Re: Cougar Contest OHA
I did email OHA about this and they never did say there were legalities but I can imagine there culd be some.
All imagination asside it is a great idea and I hope it inspires a few more Oregon Hunters to join OHA.

Re: Cougar Contest OHA
a quick thread revival as a reminder that 5pm., Jan. 6, 2011 is the deadline for submission of copies of cougar tags into the state office of OHA for entry into the 2010 contest

Re: Cougar Contest OHA
I agree all hunters in Oregon should be members of OHA. As for freebies.
Many of us work long hours for nothing but the satisfaction of giving back.
The funding for OHA Cougar contest and all other habitat, or any other project is provided by the hard work by a few dedicated hunters.
The State Board just met on the internet and approved the extention of the Cougar Contest for 2011.
Hunter dollars (tags and license fee) support 90%+ (I do not have the % in my hands but think it is 94%) of ODFW programs.
I believe in no free lunch!
