Has anyone got any scary hitch hiking stories while thumbing a ride back to the rig after a float trip? When I was 16 we floated the lower Siletz during the off season and I had to choose between walking 5 miles or accepting a ride from two obviously drunk (beer cans everywhere) men driving a Pinto with rifles between their legs. Not being a very bright teenager I accepted and it turned out just fine, they even offered me a beer.
Several times I have been picked up by different families of hippies. They always ask me whey I am carrying a fishing pole.
My scariest ride came when a teenage girl about my age picked me up as she was going to her home in the upper Siletz valley. I couldn't get her to talk to me but she kept staring at me in that Deliverance sort of way.....
On the Alsea once I had a group of teenagers do several drive-bys in their 4x4 yelling mean things and throwing beer bottles and rocks my direction. I don't think they actually tried to hit me but they still scared the crap out of me.
I sure do like rivers with a shuttle service!
