I hunt Idaho for elk. I have not yet seen a wolf in the area I hunt in the central part of the state. I've seen tracks occassionally. Elk are thick compared to anything you see in Oregon. Even with lots of elk around, locals from Idaho, not all, but some make a big deal of the occassional wolf. They seem to prefer sitting around camp and demonizing wolfs rather than getting out and appreciating a good hunt. They remind me of the guy in the video with exagerated claims of wolves exterminating elk. I don't see a problem yet with wolves and consider them a nice addition to the wildlife where I hunt. I hope to see one some day.

You know I here more complaining from Idaho than anywhere else in the country. Why is that?? I never here of a complaint from Co or Wyoming. Six guys I know are hunting Idaho this year because there sick of the crap here in Oregon. LOL I'll bet the nonres hunters are going to have a big impact.

I live in Idaho. That's where I hunt. I think in the area I hunt, the wolves have helped hunting. There used to be so many cougars up there, the deer population was dropping like a rock. They had a take limit of like 7 female cougars, and they would go pretty quick, which shut down the season early every year. The wolves have either killed 'em or ran 'em off. I never saw a cat track all season last year. We saw more deer than the last 3 years put together.

The wolves have definitely changed where the elk hang out. The lazy hunters that road hunt probably won't see elk at the end of the road, in the big meadow any more. You gotta hike into the dark timber, on the steep stuff to find them. The elk are still there, you just gotta work a little harder for them.

There's my 2 cents...

I live here in Western Idaho. Most of the wolves are just north of me, up towards riggins and council areas. Fish and Game have killed 2 big packs in the last year and a half because of the damage they have done. Wolves figure out that beef is good to eat and much easier, this is the reason that they have been getting killed by F&W. Wolves are also hated because they are documented to kill just to kill.

The reason you here people in Idaho complain so much about wolves is we dont want them. Its just that simple. Three years ago I ran into my first wolf. Since then I have seen several wolves in different areas. I have posted several times about our wolf encouters so I wont go into it again. I can honestly say that I have seen a decline in cows and calves in two different areas that I hunt. Last season I saw well over 50 different elk and only one calf. To me this is a big deal. It is such a big deal that the f&w will be trying to do something about it. 2 years ago I spoke with a biologist and behind closed doors he was very troubled on how well the wolves were doing in such a sort time period. They are not scared of people and I have come across 2 kills that were a few days old and looked to be for fun. This troubles me. And for the record I am not a lazy hunter I get well away from roads and ussually hunt elk about 20 days a year.

I've read cougars do the same thing.

I hunted Idaho for deer last year, and personally heard 2 wolves howl. I was on the border of the Sawtooth Wilderness. I talked to one local who said that they cannot leave pets out and night without them becoming wolf chow. I will never forget that moanful howl. Totally different than a coyote....
