Default Kwikfish

Thanks to every one that has responded to my posts lately. I have been getting a lot of great insight.

On Kwikfish, I went back and searched to make sure that I wasn't asking an old question, and I couldn't find any comments on this question.

I was at GI Joes picking up some Kwikfish on a sale there, and I was amazed at how many different color combos there were. Is there a few diffent combos that I should definantly have? Do you use different colors in different light conditions? And finally, I want to fish the Nehalem Bay this weekend, is it a good time to use kwikfish, of should I stick to herring?

Thanks again from a guy that has a lot of questions!!!

PM:

90% (or better) of those wide array of colors are designed to catch us, (the fishermen) and not them, (the fish)! However, several of the color combinations work well under different situations. The main meal ticket for chinook is the chartruse head / silver body. This plug will work (I believe) in any stream that you find chinook. It just consistantly outproduces any of the other colors out there day in and day out. I'm not saying the others don't work, as quite often under the right circumstances they do. But, you can't go wrong with the old faithful...

As far as Nehalem goes, I've been hitting it on a regular basis, and have seen people pulling the wiggler's around without much success. They can be very effective a little later in the season or upriver aways. But, right now, in the bay, I'd stick with herring. Although, if the herring aren't working it wouldn't hurt to experiment with at least one rod!

Good Luck! -Marty P.

Petermac,
Up in the Hanford Reach, we pull a lot of Kwikfish/sardine wrap off downriggers. Run the kwikfish back about 60 ft. Drop it down 17-27ft . Kwikfish is beating hell out of bottom. ****** off salmon then crush it. Charteuse head, chartreuse tail, silver body!
Add some pink spots on body for variation. Viola! nuclear chinookie!

I use kwikfish in the Sacramento River and I have to agree with the others that a silver and chartruese kwikfish outproduces all others. I also use a plain gold or gold with red spots with fair success. We use sardine wraps on all our plugs and backbounce through the holes or slots where fish may be moving through. When backbouncing I have found that jigging the plug increases my hookups rather than just letting the current work the plug. A lot of bites will come when the plug is slowing down and often times the fish will just stop the plug at this time other times they commit suicide and bury the rod tip into the water. In my experience if you run across a plug which is really hard to tune or keep running straight throw it away!!

Our fine Moderator (you know the board **** RT hehehe) has a couple of variations that he lovingly calls the "wounded baitfish" model. He has explained in detail how to make them in an ealier post here on the new BB, use the search feature to find it or if you follow the links on the main ifish page to the old DB go back to the posts around December of 99 and there is a couple of tech posts on painting lures there. I have a couple painted and ready to go. He also has some tech on curing the sardine wraps in your egg cures that sound pretty killer. Hope this also helps ya out.
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff
