The Friendly fishermen poll
Just for fun,
Let's go fishing in the next week, and do a poll on friendly, versus non friendly fishing folks.
Greet people on the water, and keep tabs on the reaction. For instance, like the post on the Siletz,
Friendly 7
non friendly 8
Mark the location you fished. Lets find out where the nice guys hang out, and where we need to go and spread the happy fishing phenomena! Its true, you know. If you go out there and start smiling and talking, it just might catch on! If you go out and growl, people will growl back!
Bank anglers the same. Walk down to a hole, (rod in hand or not marked) and greet them. See what happens!
This will be fun.
I may fish the Nehalem today and I will post my results.
Jen

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
Hey Jen, Dot and I are fishing the Nehalem for three days this week. Have had this trip planned for a month, got a rental house in Manzanita. Anyway, Im at a loss at what length the leader should be. I have used about 5 feet in the past but havent been very successful. Very recently, Marty (Peterson I think), was saying that one should use a 12-18" dropper for lead, but didnt say what would be the corresponding length of the leader. What do you guys use?

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
I like about 7 feet. Two 3.5 foot sections to be exact. Having two sections, seperated by chains, helps with the sea weed.

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
I'd be pleased to tell you what we use, but why would you want to know from someone who has caught 0 this year on the nehalem?
We use about an 18 inch dropper and the leader is about 7 feet with a pair of 6/0 hooks. (we use Vision hooks!? A bead chain swivel halfway down the leader also. Same thing Leaky is saying.
Went again today, but today we gave up on herring and tried bobber and eggs up river. It was fun! Had the same results! 0 0 0 0 0
I'm frustraaaaaaaaaaaaated!

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
Polled two fishermen at Tanner Creek on the Columbia. One cordial response. The other was very inviting. The picket fence was in place with folk throwing spinners and being a novice with a bait casting rod I decided not to fish at first - just to watch and get a feel for things. Then the best caster of the bunch looked up at me and said I wasn't going to catch any fish standing there. So, I felt welcomed to join in. Nobody caught fish by the way but it was nice to share the spot and not feel judged based on skill level.

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
Thats what I like to hear! And that is the kind of response I usually get too.
I am not familiar with too many rotten types.
When I was on the Nehalem the other day, all I got were smiles! Not one grump.
Went to the PC boat ramp yesterday and talked to the fishermen. I had no rod in hand. They all smiled too.
I dunno. Maybe it is a girl thang.
Maybe fishermen don't growl at girls.
I don't think they growl at newbies either.
Maybe if people feel threatened they growl.
Someday I am going to go up to a gaggle of people on the bank with rod in hand, growl and shove people around! Elbow them out of the hot spots! Maybe I can get them to growl if I try really really hard! Hee hee!
No, I'd never do that. I personally want to savor the smile thing. If fishing weren't a happy experience, I'd quit.

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
No doubt, P.C. would be my first pick for places to find unfriendly fisherpeople!!! But, most of the people there are just fine. Anyone who's fished there knows that when the fish are there, the Point can be the most vicious place on the planet, if you're not one of the "right" people. And don't dare try to fight a fish through the people with less than 30lb test, you'll get "growled" the entire time!!
Last year was especially grumpy at times, because the bobber fisherman didn't do anywhere near as well as the corky fishermen.
By the way, Jen...where there any fish there??

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
Went fishing down on Capitol Lake for the Kings. Fished off the bridge by the power plant. First ones there Sat, and second ones there on Sunday. Everyone was friendly as heck, except one guy that was quiet, but still cordial. Everyone was exchanging fishing stories and experiences, as well as advice on different rivers. One guy was even nice enough to share his coffee. The only people that were unfriendly were the joggers or walkers/on-lookers. The numbers were about half/half with those folks. Lots of Kings jumping, but none caught. One guy did SNAG one using a buzzbomb with a nice sized treble from the railroad tracks. He didn't punch his card either. He left moments later, but I think one of the guys got his tag number to report him. Sad thing was, he showed up at 8am and SNAGGED him with his 3rd cast. The guy was really nice when he first showed up, as he sat back and talked with all of us, saw what we were using, and no, we weren't using trebles. Action really stinks there, but if you want a good show, then go to the bridge around high tide and watch em jump around like flipper.

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
PC boat ramp: Quite a few jacks caught at Woods last week, slowed to very few now.
I did see one very thick nice 45 lber come in, caught by a 12 year old 'dream' kid. He was cleaning the fish too! Why don't my kids know, or wanna know how to do this? I was jealous!!!

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
Jen
cannot give you a friendly fishing report having not wet a line lately. But while bowhunting this weekend I ran into 3 seperate bowhunters who were all friendly and we had a nice chat. Then I ran into 3 good old boys who where out scouting for rifle season. I had visions of "Deliverance" as they voiced their opinion on their dislike for me and my kind of bowhunters. It has been a long time since I was uneasy in a meeting like that. They were all armed and talking crap, and drinking. 1 bow -vs- 3 pistols and 3 rifles didnt look good for me. Big sigh of relief when they drove off. Most will answer a smile with a smile, then their are those that will be what they are, no matter what their sport is.
Sort of felt like a lone indian -vs- the 7th cavilry. Maybe I should get to net some fish now.

If they were drunk I would have phoned the cops. Drunk rednecks and guns don't belong in the same paragraph. I hope you didn't here voices saying "you have a pretty mouth boy"

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
YUCKO!
That must have been scary, bait.
I have been scared a couple times. Once I went fishing, met some other fellow fishermen and decided to walk way upstream to a hole he knew about. On the way he mentioned he carried a gun. "Do guns bother you?" he said. Hmmmmmm. All of the sudden I got scared. I didn't know this guy, I was being too trusting. He could be a serial killer.... he could be.... AUCK! I ran! I really did. The poor guy, (if indeed innocent) probably thought I was nuts! But it just hit me that I could have been really stupid!
I was only 19 or so at the time though.

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
Hey Jen were is PC?
Went fishing on the Coulumbia, downstream for Kelly point for those URB. My survey resulted in 2 positive attitiudes. One boat to my left smiled and was pleastent to talk to. The boat on my right was giving out advice on length of leader to use along with colors and lure choice. It is nice to know that some people will give out advice right on the spot without much fanfare. I do come across some "grumpy" fishers out there but for the most part everyone is trying to get along.
I did not find one "grumpy" fisher, Maybe had somthing to do with the nice weather?

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
Jen,
Made a conscious effort to say hi this weekend, and was rewarded with 100% cordial responses at Nehalem.
My kids got on the band wagon and said hi and waved to just about every other boat out there too. That, I must admit, got a little old after the fifth or six time by the same boats! (JK). I was the guy out there with his own cheerleading squad !
Kill 'em with kindness

Take your kids fishing, they'll love you for it.

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
I fish both PC and the Nehalem and have found nice folks both places but the Nehalem seems to be about the nicest place to fish.
Two years ago I trolled past a couple of guys (who had just landed a fish)and asked how it was going the reply was more than I expected. I was told exactly where they hooked the fish, leader length, amount of lead, trolling speed and they even showed us the spinner they used.
Guides also seem to talk and respond as well. I supose if your there often enough you get noticed and others realize your efforts and tude and respond in kind.

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
I have to agree that the Nehalem has the friendliest group of fisherpersons. I have only had one bad experience there which was a couple of weeks ago (Art's Farfegnugen sp? basically ran me over...he does not believe in sharing the responsibility of avoiding collisions).

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
I drifted the Kilchis R. last fall with a buddy. We came upon a productive looking hole. There was a nice looking woman fishing it from the long gravel bar by it. We politely asked how she was doing and she up and started throwing rocks at us and swearing and screamed at us to never fish her river again! We got the heck out of there fast, but I still got 4 darts stuck in my backside as I rowed away. Then a few months later after joining Ifish I came to realize that woman was Jennie! Don't even think about fishing that gal's water! I had a hat and sunglasses on so I never told her that was me ... until now. So, what's the deal Jen?!? ...... OK, just getting even with you for the emu pic . She didn't really throw rocks or darts at us, but boy can she swear it up! (jk). - Seriously Jen, I'm really glad you had this great idea. Thanks. I think a movement may be started that could change the demeanor on our NW rivers for the better with the growing power of net communication. Keep it up fishers! - RT

Re: The Friendly fishermen poll
Bill would get a kick out of this.
Every time he uses the word "Damn" he gets a look from me and knows to change it to darn.
Cuss? Me? It hurts my little ears!
I think it makes people appear uneducated.
