Default Diver questions

Im curious about all the different type of divers out there and wondered why people use one type over another. For example, why couldnt one use a jet diver, used drift fishing, out at bouy 10 instead of a pink lady, for example. Could someone tell me what divers are used where and WHY?

Other question.....not being an owener of a jet motor, I was curious to know if they are like a four stroke in that you dont have to add oil to the gas?

Oakie,Not sure what you mean by Jet motor. The jet is a pump, a centrifugal pump sucks up water at the center of the impeller and discarges at a rapid rate. The discharge gives the boat the thrust to move. The engine is either an outboard (4 stroke, or 2 stroke) or like mine it is a inboard. The inboards are all 4 strokes, such as a chevy or ford v-6, v-8. Mercury makes a inboard and I beleive it is also a 4-stroke but I am not 100% sure. I also have questions regarding the different divers, hopefully someone will respond with good info.

Can't help much with the diver questions but as far as the jet motor question....I have a boat with a mercury sport jet which is oil injected. You don't add oil to the gas directly, there is a 2.5 gal resevoir that you keep filled up. The motor system adds and mixes by itself. It doesn't use much, have about 110 hours on the motor and i think I've put maybe 7 or 8 gals. into the resevoir (always try to keep it full!) I also have a 15 hp honda four stroke kicker that is plumbed to the main tank, real nice and handy. Hope this answers your question, one of 'em any ways.

Oakie,

There are 4 primary difference in divers. Release mechanism, size, color and shape. If your trolling for salmon at Buoy 10, use a deep six, pink lady or my preference delta divers. The pink lady and delta are close to the same but the increased angle on the planing bar and reversed planing surface make the delta a better diver. In other words, they diver faster, hold there dive better and still release easy when a fish strikes. The deep six uses a adjustable tension clamp that you tighten or loosen for light biters or heavier currents. The deep six is a good diver, but eventually the clamp can wear out. The other item is color. Only delta's have come out with large color selections. And coho and kings can be selective with color. Plus different colors attract fisherman, we can't just stop with a few. I like the larger sizes when trolling in traffic. They diver quicker and keep the line close to the boat and you can actually bury them next to the bottom where the kings live.

The jet divers are primarily used in the rivers since they have a air chamber. Skilled boaters can regulate the dive by pulling harder or softer on the oars or when back trolling with a motor. You can use the larger jet diver at buoy 10 for silvers, but since the before mentioned divers work better, why would you.

Thanks for the info on jet pump motors. I asked because when/if in the future I have a jet boat/motor, I would like to run it off the same tank of gas that my 4-stroke 9.9 runs on. Your answers were great and informative!

As far as the divers are concerned, I can see when one would want to get down deeper for chinooks at times.

Oakie, check with Steven's Marine, they have an after market oil injection system that has a separate oil reservoir that mounts inline to the motor...you fill your main tank with straight fuel and just have to watch the oil level... as for divers I like the EZ-Diver by the same company as Delta Diver...Pink Lady's have a bad habit of warping the keel that holds the weight..and pulling to one side or the other...I have used Deep Six's size 0 for about 15 years...but am getting tired of getting gouged in the pocket book and just accidently bump one while landing a fish and the weight breaks off...then you have $10. to $12 bucks of junk...I have personally gone back to keel sinkers of 4 to 6 oz. and drifting back in on the tide...saves on gas frustration of fighting the 10 line..and the suttle motion of the waves under the boat imparts enough motion on the bait to get results...all kidding aside when fishing at Bouy 10 like the other guy said with delta divers you can nose dive your gear under the boat and keep gear out of others...so the best, is your own preferance, all systems will work...I like light steelhead tackle like a Lamiglas Hot shot rod and Ambassador 5000 and #15 Maxima for fishing B-10, have lost very few fish to break offs and landed a 40# Upriver Bright a two years ago...

Oakie, I tried Jumbo Jet divers at B10 this year. I decided to try them because unlike other divers they do not sink when you are not moving (or the water). The Jumbo Jets pulled my bait (herring) down at least 15-20 pulls depending on the current/boat speed. However, I think line diameter plays a critical roll in the depth a diver at least a Jet diver can obtain. I was using 50# braided on a couple of rods and 20# mono on others. The Jumbo Jet pulled the 20# mono down farther and at less of a angle. The Jumbo Jets just could not get the heavy line down. If you are using 15# mono, you should be fine.

Ed, interesting! Lots to think about from your post. I think I own at least one of every type of diver on the market, lol. Never thought about the line type before in corresponding that with the diver. : ) Thanks
