Default Boat Purchase - step two.

Hey guys, this is another post on the boat that I am considering buying. Last week I gave a description, and asked some questions and got some good feedback from the members, so here goes again.

Went for a ride last night in the prospective boat.

First when running flat out, there was considerable "pinging" in the engine, like a car with a bad batch of gas, or low octaine type ping. Owner thought that he could adjust the timing and correct that. When you backed off on the throttle a bit it smoothed right down and sounded great.

Second, a little bit of water around the head gasket, and he said he would repalce the gasket to fix that.

Third, when cruising at top speeds, the turning was stiff, and at low speeds very easy to turn.

Fourth, the throttle didn't seem to do much for the first 75% of its range, and did the vast majority in the remaining 25%.

The last thing, when we pulled the plug after being in the water for a half hour or so, approx a quart to two quarts of water came out. We took no water over the sides, or anything, so this must have come from hull leaks. Remember the boat is a '66 rivited aluminum Starcraft.

ALl in all, with the exception of the above questions, the boat ran very well. A little clunky going into reverse, but back to forward was smooth. Very quiet motor, you could have a conversation at full speed.

He is to fix the above over the weekend, and we will take her back out early next week.

If anyone has anything to comment on the above questions / issues I came across, I would appreciate any feedback you may have for me.

Thanks very much,

PeterMac

PS This board works great. Yesterday I met Sluttgoddess (mind you, he looks nothing like his board name), and purchased three rods from him I posted I was looking for on the equipment board - Thanks Bill!!!!

Default Re: Boat Purchase - step two.

hey you get what you pay for ...
it floats, it runs, that ain't too bad ! !

Is that water maybe from cooling system leaks? I had a boat (Dad's) that used sea water to cool the coolant (Volvo I/O) - - it leaked pretty well.
