So I have a one gimp foot and was calling by myself today, so I decided to try and find a secluded, easily accessed clearclut to hunker down in and call. I figured out where I would go, parked, and snuck a couple hundred yards into the cut I was headed for. Too bad when I got there it was occupied by a dozen elk, none with headgear but a couple pretty light bodies. I would be surprised if there wasn't a least a would-be spike in the group. I casually bumped them accross the clear-cut and decided to sit and call anyway, I had nowhere else to go. I blew on my new little rodent/jackrabbit/cottontail call (depends which reed you use, but they all sound about the same to me, and they all sound a little like my deer bleat call as well.) I probably only sat for 20 minutes before I decided the elk had probably hurt my odds, but decided to get up and look for some bone as long as I knew the elk had been in the area. As soon as I entered the woods on the edge of the clearcut I kicked a doe, who I'm guessing came in thinking I was a bleating fawn. I blew the call to see if I could stop her, and then looked to my right to see a pair of low, light tan ears darting off through the brush... What I can only assume was my first called in coyote

I guess I need a little more patience and another set of eyes! I drove around for about an hour and saw four other deer and another 6 or eight elk. Nothing with antlers that I could see! Good day in the woods. TOC.
