Default PLEASE HELP WITH THIS QUESTION......

My question is:

WHY DO FISH JUMP ???

I've heard all types of reasons and theory's as to why fish jump and roll around...

...any answers ???

My Theory:

Fish don't have a middle finger, and it's their way of "finning us off"!

Dont know
I believe a fish will jump more with a limber pole than a stiff one. Anybody else observe this? Not being much of a bug tosser I will fish with a fly pole and spinning reel. Cannot keep the fish in the water with this set up.
Might be part of the answer you seek?

Marty,

You've hit upon one of the great myths of salmon angling. The just like tootsie pops, the world may never know. Some theories are exitement, or that they are trying to remove parasites or that they are trying to loosen their egg skeins/milt sacks. I honestly don't know because they should be pretty much free of parasites when they are way upstream, and their egg skeins/milt sacks aren't developed in tidewater and They jump readilly in both. So I'm just going to go along with they are jumping out of eagerness that they are close to completing their mission on earth. Which is to be on the end of my line

I believe it is because fish don't have a middle finger!! (or that is at least how it feels when they are jumping all around you and you can't hook into one).

Must be the finger thing. Or maybe they roll and jump to get a look at who's throwing out such crappy bait at them. - I have a serious theory: In addition to the ones RS mentioned, I think that fish that are getting nearer to spawning engage in territorial excitement and defensiveness and often will chase each other around in some holes. While doing this some of their sprints carry them out of the water. - RT

My theory is probably the best one because usually the simplest answer is the right one. Fish jump because they can. LOL Duh..lol

You know, I've wondered about this too! I recently started going to much lighter tackle and I see more air time on my fish. We use steelhead drift rods on downriggers for Coho with 8 or 10 LB line. Try this it's a hoot! The fish jump again and again. We love it when that happens.

A deluxe buckle with splash and photo!

I've seen all kinds of fish jumping. Tarpon in the bridge channels in the Fla. Keys seem to be showing off when they tail walk or just fly through the air shakin their heads. Big daddy can put on quite a show below Bonneville dam. Even a 10 footer can get clear out off the water and make a huge splash.

I don't care why they jump but I hope they keep it up. The bend is your friend!

I assumed Marty was asking about unhooked fish in a hole. That's what I answered to. If you ask why do fish jump when hooked, I'd think it was obviously to help throw the hook out.
