BUOY 10
If you were at Buoy 10 (on the line) during the flood tide Sat. and Sun. you should of picked up a few fish. It seemed that there was a bite (not red hot) that was somewhat steady both days. The Ebb tide was not the best, but kicked out a fish here and a fish there. I hope it picks up like it usually does, It's getting close to it's peak. Good luck to those that get to fish this week.

Re: BUOY 10
Fished the incoming tide on Sunday AM -
between Ilwaco entrance and the bridge, mostly following concentrations of boats and wherever I saw fish on.
Was not super-red-hot but there were fish being caught. Seemed to stay pretty crowded close to the bridge, we fished there until I got un-nerved by how strong the tide was running, that bridge was getting closer really fast. So I ran back out.
I had my 12-year old son and his friend with me, I really wanted to get them into some fish - but it wasn't looking too good, they were getting restless and bored by the 5th hour on the water. We had a couple of bumps (maybe sandbars - I didn't see them) but no real action. Right about at flood tide we ran back the Ilwaco entrance again and I said this was pretty much the last chance, I was concerned about the fuel supply.
My kid's friend's rod started jerking and the fish jumps, of course, on the OTHER SIDE of the boat, so we had small circus while I tried to get the other line out of the way. He came up with a slack line and just a herring, oh well ... so I untwisted the other line and brought it in. In the meantime, the fish had apparently taken his bait right next to the boat, because when he tried to reel it in it wasn't coming - yeah man! There was a salmon on it. So after a fine fight, a couple of line stripping dives, a trip around the propellor zone (etc. etc. - the usual routine!) we had him in the net ... check that fin - yeah baby ! 15# coho for dinner !
Easily the best one-fish day I've had. I got a kid his first salmon, felt like I've changed the world !
Picked up 3 nice crabs to round out the feast and further make a mess of the boat.
Had a pretty exhilirating ride back to Warrenton against the tide, with the wind, around the river, kind of wild in a 16' boat with a 35hp motor - really the weather was excellent. My steering linkage came apart about 50 yards from the ramp (fixable) - I'm thanking all the fishing gods that it didn't happen 20 minutes earlier - it would have been a little TOO exciting.
Seemed like most boats had a fish or two.

Thanks for a fun story Phish. I have much more fun seeing a kid catch a salmon than catching one myself. Good trip. - RT

Re: BUOY 10
Anyone else have much luck at bouy 10 or the Astoria bridge area? I fished all day Friday and got one Coho about 10 lbs right next to the bridge and then three of us fished Sunday with only one fish that broke off at the boat right at bouy 10. Not much luck for 20 hours of fishing, and we didn't see that many fish caught.
One of those in the boat did reel in to find a six inch smolt on his hook along with his herring...twice!

Re: BUOY 10
We fished hard Sunday 3 hours before high slack and through to 2 hours into the ebb.
one 13 lb. hatchery silver, one other takedown and that was it. Not great by any stretch of the imagination. We concentrated in the church hole-Astoria bridge area.
I'll say one thing....there's no way on earth that chinook quota got filled. Aside from last Mon. & Tues. good king bite, it has gone back to very mediocre for kings. The fish checker verified this.
Anyone want to place bets whether the higher ups have the nad's to re-open the area for kings? I say they'll wimp out. Hope I'm wrong.

Re: BUOY 10
I'd say the B-10 fishery has been a disappointment. For the numbers of fish expected, this year hasn't lived up to it's promise. The bite over the weekend was decent at the B-10 line, but that's only if you can stand fishing in that fiasco. We've done much better the previous 2 or 3 years than we did this year. Sooner or later, those silvers will get moving, just wish I could be dowm there when they do. I don't think I'll make another trip down there this year, though.

Re: BUOY 10
Monday and Tuesday It seemed to be about the same as the weekend for fishing. The flood tide going against it on the line (right at buoy 10) put some fish in the box, still not red hot though. There were a lot of take downs, but again it was hard to get the fish to stay on. Any feed back on what a person can do to keep them hanging on? I've tried different size's of hooks with a trailer, without a trailer, ect. Keep in mind that if you do go out to buoy 10 on the line it get's real thick with boats. Good going to you, and let's all catch some fish!

Re: BUOY 10
Maybe loosen the drag a little bit ? The trailer's a good idea. Also, I like to keep the engine in gear until the fish is ON ...
after that it's keep the rod up and keep crankin'
Maybe tighten the drag a little bit ? ? Maybe don't grab those rods so fast - THAT's hard to do

Re: BUOY 10
Thanks Phish-on, I'll give those things a try. It gets old after a while when you can't get those hooks to stay in. But it still beats working! Thanks again, and good fishing to you.

Re: BUOY 10
I had the same problem keeping a hook in a strong takedown. After loosening the drag in the rod holder I had much better success in boating them. Still not sure about keeping the boat in or out gear. Tried both ways, depends on the strenght og the current I guess

Re: BUOY 10
Anybody fishing silvers at or near Buoy 10?
Has the recent rain been enough to bring a new slug of them in?

Re: BUOY 10
Sorry to say this but we fished there yesterday it was rough, windy and slow. Had only one good take down all day...it broke the leader not long after hook up. The vhf radio made it sound real slow everywhere. I hope to maybe get there one more time, but I don't know. D Rees report said "White Hot"....they must be smoking something. Better Luck

Re: BUOY 10
Monday the weather was absolutely perfect - well maybe not for catching fish, but sunny, warm, barely even a breeze.
Caught one native, released unharmed except for that punctured lip, and a BIG FAT finclipped silver. Probably about 5 other hits that didn't hook up ... actually had a double when we caught the keeper but only connnected with one.
Almost better yet, hauled in NINE keeper crabs, all but a couple were nice hard shells.
Fishing was pretty slow, not much pressure on a Monday (harder to tell where the action is!) - caught the fish in a massive rip just inside of Jetty "A" just before flood tide.
That's all, back to "work" - yuk!
