Default Oregon fishing in November

I'm heading on a family vacation in very late October/early November. I'm doing a straight shot down I-5 and then doing the slow drive back up 101.

What my question is, is there any rivers open for salmon/steelhead at this time and which ones are open? I have done nearly no fishing in coastal Oregon so have no ideas on runs and such. I don't want exact spots since I'll do my own research when I'm there, but just some general info. I've made two requests and have waited over 2 months for a copy of the Oregon fishing rules book and it still hasn't arrived yet. I figured this way I could get a general idea on where to zone in on for camping spots on the way home. If I have to I'll just pickup a copy of rules when I buy my licenses when I cross into Portland. I'm harddriving first day to make it to southern Oregon so I can make upswing to 101 and take my time coming home.

Any help would be appreciated, and as I said, I don't need to be told honeyholes. I know how sacred they are to people. I just need general ideas on what rivers to try fishing (and city they're in/by) and that it also needs to be bank accessible river also. No cat on this trip, so will be just early morning quick fish or late evening sundown fishing off the bank.

Thanks for any help.......

Thanks Steve. Funny reading your story. Actually I'm deadheading to the Redwoods. Gonna do some stuff for the kids on the way (Wildlife Safari), but then hit 101 all the way to Astoria and hit the beaches and fish with the kids. I'll have to watch them though, I don't know if I'm ready to watch my kids hook into a fish bigger then them (hmmmmmm, maybe that could be fun too).

Thanks Steve, I'll keep that in mind and will have my rods with me.....

Hi Jerry. Good trip planned, and with good timing. Late Oct./early Nov. is prime time for fall 'Nook river fishing. Most of Oregon's coastal rivers have runs and they should be very good this year as elsewhere due to the upswing in ocean survival rates. If the rains are late this fall fish thru tidewater areas with eggs and float and also spinners (size 4 Vibrax in silver w/ blue body). If the rains are early the rivers with the best late runs of fresh 'Nooks is the Chetco R. on the south coast and the Tillamook area rivers up north. But you can find fish at that time up many rivers all the way up the coast. Concentrate your efforts on the lower half of rivers and add your 'Nook driftfishing techs to the above suggestions. We would really appreciate a big story post of discovery and fishing by you after your adventure! Good luck and have fun Jerry. -- This trip reminds me of one I took with my wife many years ago early in our marriage. We had driven down the California coast from the Smith R. area to visit the Redwoods. We drove back up 101 the entire length of the Oregon coast; with fishing gear on hand of course. I wanted to do something I thought would be unique so over the course of a couple days we stopped at every single river larger than a trickle creek and I fished them all; only a few casts in some. I wanted to be able to tell my friends that I fished every river on the coast; and I did. Only caught a few fish in the lower parts of some of the rivers; in Sept. Most of them had no bites. But I figure I belong in the supplemental edition of the Guiness Book of Stupid Endeavors that aren't worthy of the real edition. - RT

Elk And Sixes near Port Orford, within a
few miles of each other. Elk has a hatchery
on it. Flores Creek ain't too far from there either. Big fall hogs depending when the rain blows out the sand from the mouths.

I'm with you on that one Jen...looks like a great fall coming up! I just need to get elk hunting out of my system through September. You probably have a herd in your backyard!

Actually most of you have hit it on the head stopwise. My trip is mainly a family trip up the 101 coast. I'm starting at the Redwoods and working my way through Bandon, Newport, Tillamook, then Seaside. I just wanted to do some fishing inbetween stops since I know I should be in some salmon/steelhead. Just I haven't really fished Oregon, so need to know what the runs are like. Thanks for all the info. Now I get to do some scouting when I'm in the area.....

You appear to have a computer and an internet-thingy -- print your own regs :

I will vote for the Nestucca and the Wilson (and/or the Kilchis and/or Trask)

and the Tillamook Cheese factory !

The aquarium in Newport is kind of interesting, too ... AND it's right by the Rogue Brewery. Eat at Mo's !
