Default Tuna and Halibut Terminal Tackle Question

It dawned on me the other day that I have yet to answere the question of how best to attach this stuff to main line.

What kind of snap should I aquire for tuna lures as well as halibut rigs and jigs? Something like the below pictured or ?? Do I need different products for hand-lines vs. trolled vs. Halibut. As well, any anti-chafing terminal tackle I should be considering in this arena.

This is the context of clones, cedar plugs, no excuse halibut rig, etc... Swim and live biats I assume one would simply tie directly to 25lb mono top-shot.

Size, strength recommedations would be most helpful.

Thanks

Good stuff, small picture sorry.

Sampo #RX8C for chrome and BX8C for black, 300# ball bearing and crosslock. Best for TUNA! handlines, won't break.

Sampo #RX67C for chrome and BX67C for black, 200# like above for stand-up gear and TUNA!

I use 250# SS ball bearing barrel swivels for Halibut.

Just what pilar said. Sampo ball bearing swivels.(BTW I believe these are superior to the swivels that penn manufactors. After a few trips the penn swivels start to wobble and don't render its silky smoothiness as a sampo does) I like to use one of those duo-clip snaps.. I'm not sure what its called, perhaps one who has fished with me knows the term. I also crimp the leaders on, I run the main line through the swivel twice in a twist motion, then crimp it. To attach the leader to the hook, I like to use a Plastic O ring(wrap the leader on this O ring, tighten the loop and then crimp) inside a welded metal ring. Which is slid onto a 8/0 double hook. Hope this was understandable.

If I can find my digi cam cable ill take a pic and upload it to this thread.

Sampo swivels. I have some that are about 10 years old and in great shape. Never used anything else. Can't remember how heavy they are but they are pretty big. I have two types; one like the picture and the other is a split type that you have to push apart. Don't really like them as much since they can be hard to push apart at times.

As for live bait fishing sometimes 25lb. isn't the right line. Depends on whether or not the fish are line shy and your bait. If you are fishing with just two eyes and a wiggle you need to drop down in hook size and tying 25lb through a small hook eye can be difficult to impossible (we don't use leaders). Although there are some tricks to overcoming that. Like attaching the small bait hook to a larger hook. Also 25lb can be difficult to fish with such small bait. I've used 15lb P-line on a Calcutta 400 with pretty good success for fish up to about 30lb. If you are fishing for meat this isn't the way to go. Not sure why you need to top shot the mono when bait fishing or using swimbaits.

I do my gear just a bit different from most. I put swivels on all my leaders. My tuna jigs have the heavy brass type. My swim baits all have leaders with barrel swivels rigged. Halibut rigs have a 4/0 barrrel at the top. (I use a different halibut rig that does not spin up like the others tend to do.) And for salmon I use the really good chain swivles (BC Angelers carries them). So on my main line all I have is a good McMahon stlye clip tied right to the line. (Brads brand of the ones Englund marine carries). I like it for two reasons fist it eliminates at least one "joint" (any spot that the line can fold over on itelf when slack) and one less expensive part to lose. Sampos aren't cheap ya know. My buddies don't buy into it. But I feel I have fewer tangels, less line spin and it is a bunch easier to untangle when things do get wrapped. It is such a clean setup that lines can cross without tangling up.
