Default Kicker is popping out of reverse, Whats the fix?

My kicker is a Suzuki 9.9 97 model. I've been running it in reverse to hold my position at anchor. Recently it's started popping out of gear. We've had to tie a rope around the shifter to hold it in gear.

Anyone know what I need to do to fix it?

Sounds like maybe the shift dog in the lower end is wore.

What's a shift dog? Is it something I can repair or would you recommend my mechanic tear into it?

You have to take the lower unit apart to get at it. I don't know about the newer OB but my older Johnson had one wear out and it kept kicking out of forward. I fixed mine. Not that hard. Might want to get a book on it.
