guzzlers
guzzlers need maintence, and the material and labor to maintain them is donated. in central oregon a call has gone out for materials to maintain existing guzzlers. the usfs is in charge of a bunch of guzzlers, and they are looking for materials. here are the main items, 4' to 7' t posts, heavy duty ones. 2'x12' roofing metal, brown is a good color. 2x6x10' pressure treated lumber, 10' sections of plastic rain gutter with one down spout, two end caps, 8 gutter brackets, wire mesh to keep leaves/needles out, 1/8" heavy mesh. roofing screws. these same materials are needed in every area of the state with guzzlers. i have a request in right now with the usfs for a complete material list for a new guzzler. yes this is a blatant request for you to get involved.i'm going to see if i can gather up a guzzler this year. then try to get it installed. how hard can it be.

Re: guzzlers
I can't build a whole guzzler, but I can sure donate something toward it. Who do we contact, and are there any other agencies that build and maintain them.

Hi Richard.... I've been told you might be able to provide some materials
to us for our guzzler maintenance program? Reoccurring maintenance needs
include sheet metal roofing(most commonly 2'x12'), 2"x6"x10'(pressure
treated if available), 4-7 ft. fence posts(T-posts), gutters(10 ft.), sheet
metal screws, or 50# salt blocks(w/trace elements). If you can help us out
with any of those guzzler items it would be great. Thank you for the
consideration...wb

Re: guzzlers
Hey baltz,
Interesting story...
I've been up bird hunting around Heppner.
Up there we've run into a few guzzlers, a couple of which are in really GOOD shape!
In fact one still had so much red paint on it that I thought it had been built in the past 10 yr.s.
I walked up and looked it over and it had a sign on it that said "Oregon Game Commision" on it!
I wonder HOW old that one is?!!
It was in great (looking) shape.

Re: guzzlers
when you come across a guzzler, check the gutter to make sure it is free of debris, and the drinking basin, make sure it is not getting burried, if it has a fence, make sure the gates are closed, if the fence needs repair, feel free to repair it.

Re: guzzlers
Paulina Guzzler Project June 24-25: The Capitol Chapter OHA and several other organizations and OHA Chapters will be putting in at least three Guzzlers that weekend. We have been ask to haul the tanks over because the company that makes them is near here. If you have material to donate see the list above, I am sure we could get that over the hill if you are in the valley. We have seveal members gong over and they have large trailers. This will be the third year for the Chapter building guzzlers in the Paulina District and the 8 year of Aspen enhancement in the Prarie City Ranger District (June 17-18). Many of us make a week of it and stay over if you are interested in particpating let me know by PM. We need to know ahead of time on how many are going to me there helps plan the work.

Re: guzzlers
lots of contact information has been added. if you look thru some of the links, the person to call in your area is listed. their name, job discription, phone number, office address, then if you look that office up, most have an email contact. some have web sites. all have a phone number listed. if we want to help our huntable wildlife, we all need to step up to the plate. i'm going to do more, my wife enjoyed the first guzzler experience. so we may do the week in june, if my time allows. i will be donating material. lumber, t posts, hardware, screws, gutters, the cost of the tanks is beyond my ability, but with some help working together, we may be able to help there.

Re: guzzlers
painted metal roofing: for repairing guzzlers the material, i was told, could be used, but in good condition. also the volunteer, guzzler maintenence person i talked to said, that they need the small things, like gutters, screen, screws, t posts, . so to donate material dosn't mean you need to spend a bunch of money. the last time i did, i talked to the usfs contact on the phone. made an appointment to meet them at the local building supply, who was also donating 28 10' pressure treated 2x6, we took their shopping list, loaded the truck, and shook hands and they where on their way. donating material is easy.

Re: guzzlers
No, I haven't, but it's just because I'm very, very busy right now. The thought of having a "guzzler party" (pun intended) is pretty appealing. We all stand to learn a lot about how they work, what kind of maintenance they need, and what it takes to build one.
That, to me, is more appealing than just a donation, although in the scheme of things donations are extremely valuable.
This is a GREAT thread, Baltz, and I'm glad you're keeping it going.

Re: guzzlers
Well it turns out I will not be working for NRCS. I have to have surgery and my knee is worse than they originally thought so I no longer have the papers.
The only thing I can remember is that they are 19 inches on the high sides and 8 inches on the low where the water drains down.
Sorry guys, I am gonna be out of commission for a while :depressed:

Count me in to help with this project. I have a 20' enclosed trailer to haul materials in and I have a 4x4 quad and a small trailer to haul materials out into the field. I will try talking to the local supply houses on getting some donations. I sent a PM call me some time to talk more about this project.

Re: guzzlers
http://www.oregonhunters.org/chapter_info.htm if you go here you can find a link to each chapter. and all areas have material needs for projects. fencing is a big thing in some areas. native plants for projects are needed at times also. contact your local chapters first. it would be great if we ifish hunters could come up with the donations to buy a tank or two. this would free up some money for other projects i'm sure. old soldier can you figure out a way to do this?

Re: guzzlers
Baltz,
Here is an aricle I found by the NWTF concerning guzzlers and materials needed. I will email the contact and ask her if she can email some plans.
Build it and They Will Come: How to Build a Wildlife Guzzler
Courtesy of the National Wild Turkey Federation
In many parts of the West, water is a limiting factor in wildlife habitat. Often there is plenty of food and cover, but inadequate water supplies.
Water guzzlers are one way land managers can provide needed water for a variety of wildlife.
“Guzzlers collect rain and snow during the year and store the water for times of drought,” said Dr. James Earl Kennamer, National Wild Turkey Federation senior vice president for conservation programs. “There are thousands of acres where wildlife could flourish if the land had adequate water.”
The NWTF’s Guzzlers for Gobblers program provides water sources for wild turkeys and other wildlife in the semi-arid regions of the west. Since 1997, NWTF volunteers and partners have conducted more than 700 water projects enhancing 900,000 acres of wildlife habitat.
Water guzzlers can be as simple as a tank buried in the ground to a complete system with an apron (water collector), pipes, drinker and fence that allows for specific species of wildlife to drink. No matter which you decide to build, keep the guzzler as simple and strong as possible to reduce problems and maintenance costs.
A small guzzler can be built for $200 to $300, but could need supplemental filling during long periods of drought.
Guzzlers should be built on flat areas in canyons or draws and gentle rolling areas in plains country with soft soil for easy digging. Place them away from outcrops with falling rocks that could collapse on the guzzler.
“Placement is important because the guzzler has to be where the animals can find it, but also where they feel safe enough to use it,” said Scott Vance, NWTF’s director of partnership programs. “Always make sure there is adequate cover and an escape route to flee from predators.”
Whether placing the tank above or below ground, make sure the bottom is level to ensure an even flow out of the tank. Also, ensure there is adequate room for the plumbing down to the drinker. Situate the drinker downhill of the storage tank if using a float-valve controlled system and even with the tank for self-leveling systems. If using a self-leveling system, plumb the drinker from the bottom and use a riser valve to allow flow into the drinker.
“The self-leveling system requires the least maintenance, but some people prefer using a float valve to control the water flow,” Vance said. “The best thing to do is keep it simple.”
There are several designs of collection aprons, but all of them divert snow and rain water into storage tanks. A simple one can be built using two by fours, corrugated tin and rain gutters. The apron needs to slope slightly downward (about 3 to 4 percent) toward the gutters to ensure water flow without overflowing the gutter. Painting the apron camouflage makes it less obtrusive to the terrain.
In areas with livestock, wild horses or other large animals, fence the guzzler to protect it from damage and to allow the water to be used by the intended species.
The NWTF’s Guzzlers for Gobblers program is sponsored by Miller Brewing Company and Arizona Public Service.
Materials needed for a small guzzler
Increase amounts and size for a large guzzler.
• Tank large enough to hold a substantial amount of water
• Steel or plastic tub for drinker
• Corrugated tin or aluminum
• Two by fours
• Two valves to control flow
• PVC pipe
• Riser or float valve
• Rain gutters
For detailed instructions on how to build a wildlife guzzler, contact Kay Morris at kmorris@nwtf.net. For more information on the Guzzlers for Gobblers program, contact Mark Hatfield at mhatfield@nwtf.net or call 800-THE-NWTF.
Let us all know when you are thinking about doing this so we can be sure to pencil it in......
