Decided to head over to the Coast and give the Wilson River a try. What a beautiful winter wonderland!
Driving wasn't too bad as temperatures were above freezing and conditions slushy. Good winter driving habits were key.
The river itself was - well, I guess - perfect.
River was at 5.25' and dropping - steelhead green! Not often do we get winter steelheading conditions where it really looks like winter. About an inch of snow on the banks. Pretty good pressure on the lower river (Mills Bridge on down), but lighter up above. Some stately fly fisher folk (two rigs) had the first hole I wanted to try sowed up, so I move upriver. Lots of water to work.
I tried various approaches - used a sink tip set-up. Drifted eggo's, yarn and shrimp patterns. Swung a Pink Lady. Worked all the types of water this spot had to offer. Fished from about 9:00 to 1:00 p.m. Talked to a couple of gear fish folk who went 0-2 at this particular spot - looked like bobber and jig or bait.
Good to get out, as always.
