Home Made Pot Puller - could be a fun project
Found this - whadda you think? Could be a fun project and it mounts on any Scotty Down rigger base.
2000 lb winch from Costco @ $50.00
14 inch nylon wheel (machined) @ $70.00
3 inch nylon pillow block @ $25.00
3 inch stainless pulley @ $10.00
Angle iron and square tubbing...??
Pulls traps around 60 - 80 feet per minute with little effort according the author who posted this on another board.
Where could a guy get that nylon wheel machined at??

Re: Home Made Pot Puller - could be a fun project
I likie the idea. I've been pricing pot pullers, $770. 69 to 80 ft/min would be fast enough, that's faster than I can pull 'em.
Keep us posted.

PM UHMW he is in the business and I think he could make the sheave for you. Build one I would like to see how it comes out. I can only see one problem and it may not be a problem. You need to check the duty rating on the winch motor it needs to have a very high duty cycle or it will burn up if you use it a lot with out allowing it to cool.

I've been trying to find a 12 volt motor to make one too. I might have to pay Costco a visit to see if I can find one of those winches. Thanks for the picture!

You could try North West Polymers in Hillsboro. They do some polymer work for us.

Plenty of torque with starter motor - have to jerry rig some kind of a housing or plate to secure the beast.

not sure the motors would last too long but it sounds like a good idea..

Re: Home Made Pot Puller - could be a fun project
Starter motors don't last very long they get hot fast they are not designed for continous duty. Motors designed for continous duty are usually expensive that is why pot pullers cost so much. I have been looking for a motor for this use for a while. Even winch motors will get hot and fail if used continously for too long.

Re: Home Made Pot Puller - could be a fun project
I was at the Sportsman show in Portland this year and I was looking at some crab pots that just happened to be by some electric pullers. A guy that was walking by said, “you can’t have one of those if you live in Oregon.” I said, “excuse me?” and he said, “unless you have a commercial crab license you cant have an electric puller.” Not that I was looking at them but that was his I never looked at the regs

Seriously? I mean a limit is a limit, how does it matter under which power source the pot gets to the surface?
Anyone shed some light?

Re: Home Made Pot Puller - could be a fun project
I've got one of those pot pullers from the Sportsman show and it's supposed to be able to pull 140ft a minute, for a little over $700.
I just took a lool at the regulations and there is nothing about using an electric or gas pot puller in the marine section. So if somebody knows about anykind of law prohibiting a powered pot puller in Oregon, lets hear it.

Re: Home Made Pot Puller - could be a fun project
The regulations could be interpreted either way. I've heard the scenario repeated a number of times that a elecric or gas puller would not be legal.
Regs state that you can use use pots, rings or baited lines, by HAND, dipnet or rake.
So, the question is; does the "hand" part mean simply catching them physically in your hand, or that non-mechanical means are required such as pot pullers?

Re: Home Made Pot Puller - could be a fun project
I have a pot puller made in LadySmith BC "AceLineHauler".Pulled a pile of pots so far and also fits on the Scotty downrigger mount and plugs into the power socket! No failures other than a deeply fried fuse holder (my fault was setting in a very tidal spot in 350'with 600'of line and some nasty anchors.I over loaded the weak link not the puller)Igot my work out that day pulled the rest by hand.I could have switched sides and used the other downrigger circuit but I was a little nervous of frying something till I found out what was wrong.I would buy it again if I had to do it all over again.Cost was $549 Canadian Pesos

Re: Home Made Pot Puller - could be a fun project
Most of the smaller boats down here use the ACE and they work great...200-300 feet..BUT they will NOT handle the regular commercial pots..fantastic for squares and "mini" commercials...but THREEMUCH told us that in Oregon 25 feet is deep for crabbing...LOL

Re: Home Made Pot Puller - could be a fun project
Nalu- the Reg's you posted are listing METHODS by which you MAY capture your crabs. I did not see anywhere in the reg's a section that details how you retrieve your equipment.
the by hand refers to folks like myself who would scuba dive for fun and retain the occaisional crab that is of legal size. I asked this question about a year ago when I was getting my PADI certification.

Re: Home Made Pot Puller - could be a fun project
I just called Fish and Feather and they interpeted the same way Kronic and I did in that by hand is a valid way to catch crabs. Because Fish and Game couldn't find any place in the regs that says it is unlawful to pull traps with a motor or engine either I'm going to deduce that it's acceptable.

I think that the by-hand is in a line of items that you could use to catch crab. Go to page 12 of the rule book under general restrictions, line two:
"Use of gurdies, wenches or reels affixed to the boat to land fish (rod or line must be held in hand) except when used for retrieving crap rings or pots"
I hope this puts it to rest.
