Razor Clams Open !
Razor Clams have been opened from the Yaquina North Jetty North to the Border. I can see Wak in his Clam Diggers now!

Re: Razor Clams Open !
I actually did sharpen the shovel, dusted of my boots and looked att he tide book.
AND THEN I LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW....ARG
I think some clams are going to die. They better hurry up if they are going to create a razor clam recovery program, or a razor clam sanctuary, or federal mandated razor clam closure.

Re: Razor Clams Open !
A razor clam sanctuary would have to be mobile.....a 5 mile radius around...wherever Dan happens to be.
That's the quote of the day for sure

Re: Razor Clams Open !
That's not realy all that far fetched. Some draft regulations of different ideas in these new MLPA'S are all
about controlling not only the water but the tide zone all the way to the start of the vegitation zone. Not to mention the esturaries and vast river drainage. The Snowey Plover screwing is not just some wacko's vision of eutopia, it's real.

I've never actually tried for Razors, anybody want to share how you dig for them? (I've gone after most of the other clams)

Here is the New ODFW Razor Clam site. There are clams off the North Jetty and Agate Beach. The tides aren't all that good, the swell has been big and there is Snow on the Beach. There will be better tides and conditions. Feel free to come give it a try though.

Re: Razor Clams Open !
That is a very informative link, thank you for taking the time to find that. Looks like something I can handle...my only question is, do you need a minus tide exchange like is preferred with gapers or is any low time OK?

Re: Razor Clams Open !
I have got them at Winchester Bay north jetty at a 3.0+ tide before. That was before the domic acid thing started up again last year.
So I know that they can be had in most all conditions...it just depends on where you are digging.
The larvae drift and where ever they are when they get heavy enough to drop to the bottom is where they end up at.
It can be anywhere in the tidal cycle.....

Re: Razor Clams Open !
Thanks Walter for answering the questions for me...I had to work.
Ditto on everything Walter said....clamming is no secret around Newport, just look for the pile of people.
We did get limits on a +0.9 but we about drowned doing it.
I love razors..... even more than yelloweyes, canary rockfish and Klamath river chinooks.

Re: Razor Clams Open !
If you dig clams with wak you will need a snorkel. I prefer to dig them out of his freezer when he is at work.

Re: Razor Clams Open !
I scouted things out around NPT yesterday, and saw a few folks wandering round north of the jetty just scratching their heads. The beach at .2 with an 8ft. surf just doesn't quite show the flat out there enough for me to get motivated. One guy out there I think was the mafia, he had a gun and a shovel!

Re: Razor Clams Open !
I saw less than a half dozen people and 5 razors in their bags at N. Jetty yasterday evening. Agate Beach had at least a dozen but I skipped that with all the touristas.
Molecrabs, pieces of net and other trash were all I was able to harvest. We'll see what today brings. We're going to look at a couple other places.

I dug four tonight for dinner (by hand in street clothes) between little beach and the drive in in Gearhart. They were either necking or showing a good size round spot. mmmmmm mmmmmmm good.
