Default Shimano drag upgrades...

While at the Fred Hall show I noticed the Shimano booth had techs on site that were doing free drag upgrades on Shimano Torium and Trinidads. Just a heads up for those of you who have them. Double check with Shimano, but I'm sure the techs said that the reels could be sent in for the upgrade as well.
The upgrade has to do with leaving the drag set overnight and having a problem with it locking up if you don't back it off and reset it before you fish again.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll send mine in. FYI, all drags should be backed off after the day is done. It adds years, or at least seasons to your drags. One thing, though, is that reels should be rinsed BEFORE loosening drags, so that water stays outside the reel. -D

Probably true for star drag reels, but not for lever drags. According to Alan Tani, most lever drag reels should be rinsed with the drag lever in the free position. In his post on rebuilding the Shimano Charter Special, he mentions that those should be rinsed in the strike position.

Mark,
I'm not sure when they started, just saw and spoke with the Shimano reps and techs at the show. My belief is that it is a very recent deal. Git 'em dunnn!

you got 2 choices: 1. send your reel(s) to Shimano for the free upgrade 2. do it yourself; i.e., call them to send you the parts and instructions. the upgrade has to do with replacing 3 parts for the torium and trinidads 16, 20 and 30: the drag drive plate, a new crank shaft, and a new right side plate. I had my toriums and trinidad done by the shimano techs at the fred hall show in SF back in january. It's all FREE. so, what are you waiting for?
