Re: Lower Deschutes
When the sun is off the water, use darker fly patterns. I personally like purple/black spey or matuka style patterns. However, standard patterns such as green butt skunks, purple perils, or frieght trains work very well. When the sun gets on the water, go to weighted patterns. I like a barbell or cone-headed black bodied wooly bugger with a red marabou tail. You can use this with a floating line, or to really get it down, use a sinking line or sinking shooting head.
For a real blast, try the dry fly (when the sun is off the water). I have had luck with a rusty bomber in the upper river when the caddis are hatching.
By way of spinners, when the sun gets on the water, you can't go wrong with a gold Bud's #4.
Good Luck,
