Default new guy

I figured I might as well get my new guy story overwith while I'm up. My story goes like this:

When I was about 14 my best friend and I used to ride our bikes to the Columbia everyday to fish. We always fished around the airport catching *********, carp, suckers, flounders, walleye, and bass. Our technique was simple. We just plunked worms we had caught in the yard the night before. One day our luck was particularly poor and we began to argue about who had brought the bad luck. I ended up walking downriver in search of a better spot.

After about a mile hike downriver I came to a point that looked promising. I casted the worm into the water and held my 8'6" rod outfitted with a cardinal spinning reel. I was using 12 pound ande line, a 2 ounce weight, and about a size 6 hook with a worm. As I sat on a rock I realized my mistake. I only had the one worm!

About 5 minutes after casting I had a bite. I decided to let the fish eat the bait before setting the hook. After a few good tugs I set the hook and fish on! I fought the monster for at least 30 minutes. I was screaming for my friend, but he couldn't hear me over the planes and traffic. The fish went on a run and nearly spooled me. I started working the fish back in when a stranger came walking down the rocks. The man said he was watching me from Marine drive and knew I had a big fish on. The good samaritan ended up wading about waist deep into the rivier to wrangle a 60 inch sturgeon for me!!

The story only gets better!! My friend and I had no way to get this fish home on our bikes so the samaritan took my address down and we loaded the fish into his car for transport to my house. My parents were horrified when they got home and some strange guy was filleting a sturgeon in the backyard. This was my first sturgeon and I've never caught a nicer keeper.

I learned at a young age that these are the type of people you can run into while fishing, and I can only hope to influence a youngster in the same way some day!

Actually the skybuster name comes from my dog. I figured I might catch some grief, but this is all for fun anyway.

I don't fish that spot for sturgeon anymore. I still see people down there now and again, but I have not fished it. The "hole" that used to be there is only about 20 feet deep now.

Welcome aboard, Skybuster, but watch these guys. They'll have you buying everything from kwikfish to Ammerman eggs, when all you need is one worm!

That was a good samaritan indeed!

Welcomb aboard Sky. Great story, it is so nice to rember stories of our youth, and it just reafirms the saying, you only live once and you should make the best of it. That unknown man is a hero in my book and my hat is off to him.
