Default CA. Long Range Tuna?

I and RJ are trying to make plans for next years summer adventure. We want to go on a long range tuna trip out of San Diego, we are currently thinkin about booking on the Excel or Red Rooster. Has anyone made this trip and have any pointers and what do they do with bluefin tuna is it like big eyes or white like albies? What time of year did you go?
Thanks for the help.....

Wak, I've only seen that fishing on outdoor TV shows and I seem to recall that they caught more of the big awesome yellowfin tuna. Bunch of other good fish too, especailly a lot of Dorado. - I have a good friend Paul that moved down to Cabo not long ago and sometime I'm going to go try for Marlan/Swordfish (don't if they are the Blue or Black species there) and Yellowfin. Have a blast when you are there. BTW, on other TV fishing shows I remember seeing one on fishing Kona (off the big island of Hawaii) and the captains there keep the catch! You only get the fun and sore back of fighting it in. I would have liked that rule when I was guiding for springers!!! But I don't think I'd have gotten many clients that way . - RT

Red Rooster is GREAT !!!! So is the Excel, Royal Polaris and Polaris Supreme. I have been on a three day and a five day on the Rooster. August is when I went both times. By August the exotics have moved up the line and you can plan on bringing home lots of tuna on a three day. Five days or longer allows you to get to Guadalupe Island and that is a excellent destination.

I didn't "get" what you were saying about the Bluefin.....the meat ? I have never caught a BF however I think that there meat is similar to the Bigeye as opposed to the Albacore.

If you go on the long range out of SD start working out now, those fish work yah', ;> ) and plan on gaining ten pounds due to the abundance and quality of food you will be eating.

When I check on the Excels daily report they seem to target Blue Fins, I know some tuna are sold as light tuna while albies are marketed as white. Big Eyes are big in the sushi world as are yellow fin. I was kinda curious as to the canning quality since you can only smoke so much.
I have been to Cabo and plan to go back in Oct one day, that is when they really do good and it is not as hot as july thru sept.
Another reason we are thinking San Diego is we can drive and cheaper to bring fish back.
Thanks for the imput, hey dpizza....it seems they load the boats pretty heavy. Is it so crowded you feel cramped and have to wrestle for the rail?
The food sounds good Yummy

Pay more go on a limited load. Period. My 0.02 cents.

Bluefin and Bigeye seem to be the prefered Sashimi, the Oriental fish markets will buy ANY unbruised B.E. or B.F.

Fresh canning or Commercial canning. They rip you off at the docks in the trade off between fresh and canned. Vacum seal it and it should last at least six months in the freezer.

From what I have seen when I lived in SD the Bluefin and Bigeye seem to be more incidental catches then the Yellowfin and Yellowtail. Granted when they locate a pod of Bluefin they target them but it has only been since the last El Nino that the Bluefin have been close enough to SD to target.

Talked to my old fishin' partner last night and he said they were out on a three day and plugged the boat with 7 TONS of Albacore.....

I was wonder how the trade of for can fish went and that is what I assumed. I guess I will hull it home and can it myself just like the 200 pounds I bought off the boat here.
We have canned tuna other people caught for years I just want to catch my own for once.
I will take your advice on limited entry boat I just didn't know there was such a thing.
