Default Elk Hunting

I know that this is a fishing web site, but hey if we can discuss politics and such we should be able to talk about something really interesting and close to my heart Bow hunting for Elk
As much as enjoy sneaking up on a summerun in low clear conditions.
There is nothing on this planet like bugeling in a big Bull Elk within bow range .
Having a bull answer you're call ,feeling the hair and the back of neck stand up,you're heart begins to pound.... Oh my goodness I have to calm myself down here, those of you that bow hunt for elk know what I'm talking about .
Those of you that chose to chase salmon during this time...great,I also big my rod for those lazy afternoons around camp,I mean the river is full of Salmon ,right next to our camp ,someone has to catch them
Besides having a fresh Salmon filet on the fire after a hard day hunting is not a bad way to end the day AHHHHH cold brew, good fish, bugeling Elk...God I love this.
Any Bow hunting fishing buddies out there?
sept.1st I am there

Osprey, I know exactly what you mean! You don't even have to get an elk to have a good time. Elk are almost always seen, along with other wildlife. It is definetly not anything like rifle season.

O
You nailed it with the hair on your neck standing up. Sort of like talking to god himself when you hear that bugle getting closer each time. If you get an Oregon tag you could be flinging sticks as early as Aug 26th. I have to hang up the poles and dry dock the boat for this special time of year. Hopefully T-Bay will still have some chinook on 9/25 when the season is over. Bugling elk is like no other experience. I took a friend out a couple years ago and talked to a couple bulls. I thought he was going to wet himself he got so excited. Maybe it could be described like that first steelhead with a fly, maybe that first time in the backseat, Nah, nothing like it. Everybody gets off on something, Bugling elk is it for me. Hopefully, everybody can find a rush in their life, like talking to elk is for me.

Right on guys I have the new bow cutting paper at 300 ft per second. The camiping stuff is piled in the middle of the floor. I have vacation from Sept 5 thru the 25th.
I just need to get some pre season miles on these feet. I am even starting to dream hunting so it must be close.
THe wife will even be suggecting I shave sometime soon, now if I get my traditional ingrown toe nail...then.....I will know it is time to go.

I DONT WANT TO start a fight!!ok thats straight, to me (i dont mean sledder ment it like this) it sounds like sledder was talking down on elk season for rifles. I know in many ways bow is harder i.e. you have to practice your calls , you have to get within killing range and others. But it is EXTREMELY hard to hunt elk in the snow, or sleet. Its a big pain in the ass to skin and quarter a elk in 30 degree weather, when there is freezing rain. Places where I hunt dont make those conditions any easier. I'm not saying bow hunters dont get down in the rugged **** cuz i wouldnt know. All im sayin is give everyone their props!!!PEACE OUT! PS YOU CAN HUNT SALMON IN ELK RIFFLE SEASON WITHOUT A ROD

OOOOOO-YES! There is no larger thrill than meandering through a clearcut, followong fresh sign, getting whiffs of the herd, and then the fog clears a bit and you realize YOU are IN the herd! A few soft mews and the lead bull starts ravaging the nearest alder sapling. All the while your heart is pounding in your neck and your mind is racing trying to figure out what to do next. No sleep for the next week for this boy! Pray for rain.

I love to hunt elk doesn't matter what tool I use to draw the blood. I have just seen far more wildlife and less people while bow hunting. Nothing against rifles, I have several, I just prefer bows. I am going to have a hard time sleeping, keep thinking about the rubs I spotted yesterday while scouting for elk out of the Banks area. Hopefully it will rain a day or two, within the next two weeks. You allhave a good weekend, I will be at Bouy 14 breaking in a new N.R. sled, Sunday..

A couple comments. Would anyone like to be a deputy moderator. The job won't pay much and you'll have to do the dirty work so nobody will get mad at me. I didn't think so. So ..... winterkill, and any other would be's, please at least spell your expletive like this ... sh*t. And please don't be quite so quick to stir things by accusing someone of putting your style down. Ask them in a civil manner what they meant by any comment that bothers you. As he explained nicely, it wasn't meant as a put down. And by the way, I agree with you about the challenges of the winter hunt! - With that said, I feel a need to stir stir it up with my buddy Os on this one. Now I would have been much more impressed by your post of buggling in the big Daddy for the bow hunt if you hadn't been every bit as excited when you first told me about your wild sheep hunting; armed only with your manhood! - RT

I have heard these rifle vs Bow arguements forever. I have hunted with both and loved it all. I have froze my buns off, camped in the mud, hiked till dark in a 60mph wind. but now maybe it is my age but Sept in eastern Oregon is awsome and I don't wake up froze to the bottom of the tent.
Hey RJ you are the expert in this area hunting numerous states each year and creating yourself a season that lasts 2 months, why are you climbing over that pile of rifles you have to pickup the bow. Which is more challaging hmmmm?????

I'm so glad to see so many of my fellow bowhunting brothers, but alas,I must confess that I go both ways( thought you'd love that RT)
I bow for elk and rifle for deer I perfer the cascade -west side for those Roosevelts and the north eastern side for those Whitetails and monster Mulies.
I beleive that being a bow hunter first has made me a much better rifle hunter...except for 1 bad habit that I am trying to break ...
I carry a set of pentax binocs which I love the problem his I have a habit of raising my binocs to look at game this works fine during archery but twice in the last 2 rifle seasons I raise my nocs to look at movement..(out of habit I guess?)When I'm looking face to face with large whitetail instead of looking thru my Leopold 2X7,
I guess Dad's training is hard to break...make sure what you are shooting at.
I stiil shot the old GG2s and my old Hoyt spectra eclipse with fingers overdraw,No pins no release,if you can hit what you're aimimg at and be consistant thats what counts, you must know you're limitations and you range be safe have fun and don't drop the soap if Rts around
