Default She a good SMB setup?

I got a new rod and reel a few days ago. It's a 7ft UL 2-6lb Ugly Stik Lite, reel is a Shimano Sienna 1,000 line 110 of 6lb. The guys at fisherman's said it would be good for fishen SMB. What do you guys think?

Just be sure to retie after every third fish or so, line failure at the hook eye will kill you with 6# line. I've moved up to 10# for smallies, and nothing less than 10# mono, or 20# super line for largemouth. Nothing worse than slammin' that hook home and feeling that "PINK!!!", shoulda' retied after that last fish!

I don't know. Why don't you let me try it out for a few months and I will give you a full evaluation?

Sounds like a great rig to me.... And depending on where you catch smallmouth, 6lb. line is plenty in many cases. I fish gravel bars and current breaks on the Willamette alot and throw small balsa crankbaits on 4 lb. test line. Fish rarely break off, even 3 to 4 lb.ers. If you fish in heavy cover, though, have another rod rigged up with heavier line...

Right on B-Run, it all depends on how you play the fish.
Fish-on, a lot of what you read on here comes from a bass club tourny perspective where the objective is to simply get them in the boat.
I'm not a tourny fisherman. So, pesonally I've always prefered to fish undersized gear just for the fun of it. I'm a pretty good fisherman and I've always felt I could land a fish 2x the line weight. (If I can keep the hook in it's mouth! )
Considering you bought an UglyStick, I think your only limeted by the line strength. So I think your new outfit will handle as much as you care to throw at it. If 6lb seems to bit too light bump up to 10lb.
But I have to say I have 6lb P-Line on my 6.5' spin'n rods and I've not had trouble. Shoot 6lb maxima is my prefered line for steelhead! It's all about drag.

Have fun and we'll expect to see a pic of the first bass to fall to it.

That's a sweet outfit. A friend of mine once got a 13# (weighed and eaten, 'cause it was clipped ) Summer Steelhead on a small jig using a 6' light action rod & 6# Maxima UG. Good thing I had a Squawfi...errr Pikeminnow net in the boat

An outfit like that will do a lot!!

I'm glad you're proud of your SM setup. Now go out there and catch some SM. You'll be prouder! 6# should do you ok in open water. I'm not familiar with the Shimano Sienna. But my Symetre and stradic are larger than the 1000 model and hold 8 & 10 lb test no problem. But the 1000 model may be too small for you to step up to a heavier line without also stepping up in reel size.

I also like to use ultra lite gear for smallies. I stay away from the short rods. I like the bugggy whip action of the longer 7 and 7 1/2 footers. You can land the biggest smallmouth that swims on a light rod because of the give in the action. I like to use 6 to 8 pound test but I spool it on bigger reels for a couple of reasons. one you take up more line per turn of the handle and the coils are not as tight.I think the line comes off much nicer. Now if you are fishing for big largemouths in heavy cover this setup will not get those big pigs out and in the boat. You also cannot use this outfit for big crankbaits or large spinnerbaits, but it works great for grubs and dropshotting senkos. Tight lines and God Bless.

It sounds like that setup would be sufficient to pull in about any size smallie. As some people mentioned, it would be better for some techniques than for others. I think it would be good for live bait fishing and small reaction-type lures (spinners, crankbaits). From a boat it would probably be OK for plastics. I think where it would not be as good, though, is in situations where you need more backbone, like fishing plastics from the bank or in current.
