Default Ocean Closure

The recreational ocean salmon season from Leadbetter Point to Cape Falcon will close to all salmon fishing effective midnight Sunday August 13. They are going to transfer 3400 coho from the troll fishery so that the recreational fishery can go through Sunday. Get them while you can. They have not showed in the Columbia in the huge numbers that are outside.

Huh. I knew about the Sunday ocean closure, but ODFW gave me different information on the transfer between quotas.

"For your info. The season will close effective this Sunday at midnight. In
order to make it through Sunday, the recreational fishery traded 1,000 chinook
to the commercial fishery in exchange for 4,000 coho."

This is straight from the ODFW Action Notice dated August 9, 2000;

"A transfer of 3400 coho from the commercial troll fishery boosts the Columbia River ocean area recreational coho quota to 40,900 coho and allows fishing through Sunday night."

"To keep the recreational seasons in the Westport and Columbia River areas open through Sunday and to keep the commercial troll salmon seasons from Queets River to Cape Falcon within catch allowances, a trade of salmon was made between the recreational and commercial fisheries in this area. This trade was intiated between commercial troll salmon industry representatives and recreational/charter fishing interests in the affected area. A total of 600 coho were transfered to the Westport catch area recreational fishery and 3400 coho were transfered to the Columbia River area recreational fishery in exchange for 1000 chinook to be added to the Queets River to Cape Falcon troll chinook guideline"

Just splitting hairs here more than anything else.

Well whatever, there's two of those critters for each guy on my boat Sunday. I didn't realize the "commercial" and "sport" fishers would work things like this out. Thanks guys whoever you are. I'm still somewhat puzzled over estimates of 1/2 million Coho and 1/4 million Chinook resulting in only 40,000 and 9000 fish quotas. I'm reminded of last years news when hatchery fish were clubbed on their spawning beds. Those fish would have looked a lot better in my fish box than on the tube. I hoped that doesn't happen again this year. The bend is your friend!
