Black Hooks in Salt @ Salmo ?
OK, certified King killers: Nalu, Mav, Mark MC, 5-Salt, etc..
Bud sent me a couple boxes of nice sharp but BLACK gami's to rig baitbusters up with...
Red and Nickle are my top choice.
I use Black super-mutu for Hali.
What do you think ????

I personally Love the Black Gami’s. If I remember right Maverick uses the red ones. He’s online so he’ll probably respond. In all truth I don’t think it’s makes a damn bit of difference what color your hooks are.

Re: Black Hooks in Salt @ Salmo ?
tell that to Sockeye..I speak to them while they are on the barbi..all 14 of them...color matters.
U might be right...

Re: Black Hooks in Salt @ Salmo ?
My limited experience with reds is they are very finicky. All the really good Chinook fishermen are hauling ball’s at 3 knots or better so I have a hard time believing that a hook that is mostly buried inside a hoochie is going to make a difference. But heck I could be wrong I do it all the time . Black Gami’s is all I use because it’s all that I buy.

Re: Black Hooks in Salt @ Salmo ?
Well...JD you know darned well that sockeye are an exception....what other fish bites a bare red hook better than anything else?
With ocean chinook, whether trolling or mooching I am hiding much of the hook in the bait. And with a hoochie the skirt is over the hook. So I really don't think it matters much, except if it makes the angler feel better .
Now with spoons, that might be an interesting experiment. I've always used either a stainless, nickel, or partridge (tinned) hook. The weight of the hook, and its influence on spoon action, is the important thing.

Re: Black Hooks in Salt @ Salmo ?
..I know it was not really fair...so I will retract MOST of it....well except for the barbi talk...Coho LOVE red..and in the right water/bait - Krill, so do Kings. You may be citing deep King fishng in clear water..Half my work is in 75' water fishing 20-30' down.
I did mention that these particular hook will be on a baitbuster..aint no hiding anything there..., hence the question..
Finally, I think any one variable is not a big deal..BUT I pay attention to details and try to stack MANY that seem to work together...90% of the fish are caught by 10% of the detail oriented fishers..Yep, Speed is a variable, I watch it like a hawk. I would agree, most people fish too slow for Kings.
Indy of the answers, I am going to run them..just wanted mojo groove feeling from a few of you, inc Bendman

Re: Black Hooks in Salt @ Salmo ?
Actually, IF you make a $5 donation to Ifish and pay USPS shipping, I will send you a Fat package of Owner 4/0's in Red..eye is too small for the 50# TF I use, scuffs up the leader just a slight amount..
details, all about details..
ifish wins. Send me PM and they are yours.

Re: Black Hooks in Salt @ Salmo ?
I would typically use red or nickel on the Gami, but have been using more of the Owner cutting point. I agree that the 4/0 eye is a tad small, but I find the 5/0 fine.
Perhaps it is because I am not as meticulous, but I have found the Owners to hold up better in the salt than the Gamis.

Re: Black Hooks in Salt @ Salmo ?
JD, Thanks for the offer but I too am a 5/0 guy. Now when I was a bit younger a 1/0 Owner threaded into an anchovy and mooched in a good school of fish. A few tugs, pick up the rod, drop the tip, a few more tugs, reel down, feel the weight, set the hook. One chinook with a 1/0 ulcer.
