Re: tribal fishing
RT, you really need to shut this post down now. I came over here to get away from these "flare up" type posts. But, just to put it flatly to killer I'll say this. In EVERY culture around the world from the dawn of time cultures/civilizations have been conquered and changed. Usually the standard is to either completely extinguish the people or make them slaves. The US basically conquered the tribes, and actually signed treaties with them. In most cases across time, there would have been no treaties if a war had been won. It would've been we have it all, you have nothing. It's very surprising that the tribes received sovereign nation status and receive benefits and breaks at all. Just think of the Indian tribes from central america/Mexico. The Spaniards didn't give them much of a break. The list goes on and on. Plus, pollution and screwing up natural beauty and resources occur ALL over the world. I've lived in Germany and traveled over Europe and old Eastern Block Europe before the wall came down. The Russians completely destroyed and demolished complete towns for their benefit. Germany strip mined millions of acres in northern germany for iron ore and such leaving big gaping scars in the midst of beautiful old cities. To say we're the ONLY ones who have done something wrong and to finger point at us is an ignorant thing. Before one can truly make a comment one should do some research in history and then respond. What needs to be done is to come to CURRENT status of life and to upgrade things accordingly. Contracts signed over 100 years ago don't fit into todays standards. Alot needs to be changed. BUT, we as a people (Native Americans AND US Citizens) need to work TOGETHER rather than fight each other. I have my biases, I won't lie since I grew up on the Puyallup Indian Reservation and have alot of friends who are Native Americans. But, if things are to change, it needs to be a MUTUAL thing. There's always gonna be conflict, so unless someone comes to an agreement, then nothing will change. Example, the sportsmen who's dollar helps fund the fisheries are the ones who get the biggest limitations when it comes to runs of salmon/steelhead. Yet, at same time, the Native Americans get more then an ample share of the fish that are SUPPOSED to be off limits so they can spawn and strengthen the run. So, to finger point as was down off the original post was nothing more than a way to turn this wonderful place into another Bob's BB or pure ignorance.
